Anyone live in Guttenberg, NJ? What is the neighborhood like? I know it is a small municipality but other than some condos, houses, and close proximity to NYC, is there anything there?

I lived in the Galaxy Towers for a couple years. The area has gone through some change in the past few years, especially on River Road. The main benefit to living there is the close proximity to NYC and the frequency of bus transportation. On the Boulevard, there are buses and jitneys literally every couple minutes. Schools are terrible and taxes are high though.

Half the town is a giant apartment building (the galaxy towers), the other half is a thin slice bunch of super-dense but relatively low slung row-houses wedged between North Bergen and West New York. There are (maybe? I dunno what is and isn't Guttenberg down there) some luxury apartment buildings down on river road and some less fancy large apartment buildings near the Galaxy on Boulevard East. Public transit is about as good as you can get with buses -- there are constant public and private buses up and down Boulevard East into and out of the city.

The town is a poster-child for a town that really should merge with one of the surrounding ones for the benefit of everyone except the town employees/politicians and their relatives. Further all of the local municipalities are incredibly jealous and self-protective over street parking so that would probably be a nightmare if your apartment/house doesn't have any and you get home late at night.

Anyway, with all those problems aired it's a perfectly fine nice place to rent an apartment close to the city for a reasonable cost as long as you have parking or don't have a car, and it could even be worth buying there if you don't have kids and get a discount on the sticker price relative to surrounding municipalities to balance the tax load. I actually called an apartment there asking about taking a look at one of their units (alas it had rented out after they posted the ad but before I called) a few years back -- you get a lot for your money if you can live with the drawbacks.

Default I love the Galaxy

I moved into the Galaxy five years ago and am extremely happy I live here. I have huge windows looking out onto the Hudson River and the Manhattan skyline and I never get tired of the fantastic panoramic views I enjoy on a daily basis. The landscape is always changing and it looks is great and stormy weather as it does when the sun is setting and lighting up Manhattan with the beautiful multicolor glow that is breathtaking. We have beautiful lobbies and courteous people working for us and always ready to help out. I walk across the street, get on a shuttle bus for three dollars, and take a beautiful Ride Down Blvd. East and I am at the corner of 42nd and eighth in about 10 minutes. The shuttle buses run all day and night! At the Galaxy, we have a magnificent Olympic size indoor pool that has a tropical feel and is incredibly relaxing. In the summer we have a great outdoor pool! The prices here are still low but that will change because the value is outstanding.
