Ok, so here's my situation. I'm 34 y/o African American guy, single, professional, and I eventually want to leave the Philly area and move to Central Jersey. I work in Princeton, originally from Long Island, and have family and friends in the NYC area, as well as friends in the Philly area. So ideally, I want to be in the middle of everything. I've been living in the Philly area for 10 years now...I'm just more of a NY/NJ guy and I've had enough of PA. Personal reasons among others, is why I want to leave PA for NJ. I don't need to be in a town with all the options of going out (bars, restaurants, etc...), but I can live with being in a town close enough to it so that I can drive, or even take the bus or train where I want to go.
These are the towns I'm looking at right now: Lawrenceville, Hamilton, Milltown, North Brunswick, Edison, Metuchen, Woodbridge, and Piscataway. Looking for somewhat diverse areas, not overly picky though. I'd like to keep rent under $1,300/month if possible. Still doing the research, but wanted to get some input and suggestions from people here. The move isn't likely to happen until sometime in 2015, but its never too early to do the research. I gotta start somewhere.
If there's other towns you think I should consider, lemme know those too. Thoughts?...
Thanks for the info. Anything on Edison, North Brunswick, or Milltown?
Don't know Milltown.
Edison would be just as bad a commute as Piscataway.
North Brunswick might be good if you find a place in the southern half. The northern half is near new brunswick and has a decent amount of property crime (not as much as hamilton though).
Do you drive to work or take the train? Knowing that info will help people make recommendations.
If you drive than look at Lawrence or Plainsboro. Quick trip driving to Princeton & easy access to NJ Transit at Princeton Junction for going to NYC or heading towards Philly.
If you take the train to work than Edison is an easy commute to Princeton on NJ Transit train. You may find a bus route running from Lawrence / Plainsboro going to Princeton (depends where your work.)
Princeton has good public transporation: www.njtransit.com Try using NJ Transit's "trip planner" or "service near a location" function.
Coach USA There's a bus that goes from Palmer Sq. in Princeton to NYC.
Princeton University's Tiger Transit (can be used by anyone & is free to the public.) Transportation & Parking
I drive to/from work, but still want to be near public transit as an option. Lawrence and Hamilton right now are probably the top two for me. I'm still going to look at North Brunswick and Edison also. I had someone suggest giving Rahway a try, but Edison/Metuchen/Woodbridge was as far north as I could really go, so I gotta cross Rahway off. Milltown is out at this point. I'll look into Plainsboro, and Kendall Park and Franklin Park are in play. Just tryin to keep all options open.

Why not Plainsboro if you work in Princeton? You also did not mention Ewing, parts of which further away from Trenton are very nice, safe and affordable. As for Hamilton, that's a strange place. Nearer to Trenton and in the lower income areas, it's not really safe. But in the more affluent parts of the twp, it's not very welcoming to black people.

That's the first time I heard of parts of Hamilton being like that toward blacks. I've had other friends recommend that township...obviously staying away from the parts just outside Trenton. I think I was looking at Royal Crest Apartments (or around that area in Hamilton) to consider.
