In East Orange, there are several nice buildings along Prospect Street. East Orange has a very low crime rate considering its demographics. The city has police cameras everywhere. If you have "street smarts" (i/e smarter than a suburbanite), you will be fine. BTW, I am a white professional with a masters degree, and own my house in Newark (and I won't move anywhere else). I park my new Volvo on the street every night, too.
There's nothing safe about Astoria.

One has to have street smarts to survive no matter where one lives.

I'm a single female without a car that sometimes works at night, so I wanted to know if its considered a generally safe area? I was also looking into Jersey City and Hoboken, but most of the rentals I've seen have been too expensive for me to afford. If anybody has any suggestions, I would appreciate the help. Thanks again!!!
I feel you.

I myself plan to invest in multifamily properties in East Orange to renovate for section 8 renting, and I'm not letting the social constructs people have of the area deter my plans. My big sister has been in East Orange since the late 60s and never once has she or her children been robbed or mugged.

But since you're not a driver, it would be best if you chose an East Orange location as close to New Jersey Transit and especially a supermarket as possible.

There's really no place on this planet you can go and be safe from anything. It takes common sense to survive in this world.

It also takes common sense to realize that a person who wrote a post five years ago probably isn't going to see your answer.

Sorry, couldn't resist! ; )
