The reason this is being proposed is so that the state can smuggle in a rise in the gas tax. Allowing self-serve will permit many stations to lower the price of gas by a 5-10c by getting rid of attendants. Now the state can ooze in and replace that gap with a rise in the gas tax. Claiming that there is no real increase in gas prices even with the new taxes.
Yet this is a blatant and cynical lie. If we dump the attendants such that the gas price falls, we should expect it to stay down and provide us with a saving. Not give that saving to the state.
Like everything else about the government, this is a hustle.
And it depends upon the inattention and stupidity of voters. Who was it that said: "No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the average voter"?
1. Self service in most other states cost the same or more than full service in NJ - full service in other states costs way more. The 5 cent savings for self service in NJ would last about a week.
2. Not all gas stations are covered and even when there is a roof, many pumps are not completely covered. When I am in other states many stations remove the clip that allows the pump to operate without holding the handle, so yes you do have to stand there holding the handle.
3. Why would you want the NJ to remove this benefit?
4. Many would go on unemployment.
5. Not true - not every pump and gas station is pristine, plus it seems there are many people in other states who have trouble operating the pumps as I watch people overfill their cars and leak gas (and diesel) around the pumps. Other states do not require the pumps to capture the vapors like NJ - another reason for spillage.
There will be zero benefit to those of us who buy fuel in NJ.
dont you guys care at all about government overreach in mandating things that there is no legitimate NEED for government to be mandating? i like having my gas pumped by someone else and i like paying less than other states but i cant approve of government mandates for personal preferences.
You mean your governor who shuts down bridges on people he doesn't like ,you mean that overreach ?There are government restrictions on almost all jobs, safety is the number one reason so your sky is falling attempt is rather mute .

No benefit to pumping our own gas? You mean sitting there for 10 minutes while the 1 attendant pumps 3 other cars and has to process credit card payments for those 3 other people before he even gets to my car? I could be in and out of that gas station in half the time if I pumped my own.
One time I pulled into a gas station and I was the only car there. The only attendant was inside the station apparently taking a nap or something. I saw him get up, he peered out the window, and then went back inside to sit down. Needless to say I drove away. It was unreal.

haha, what is the goofball reason for you throwing in the Christie bridgegate reference? is the assumption that I support Christie and defend his scandal? you would be very wrong on both counts. so stay on topic genius.
you cant make a case for safety when 48 other states allow self service without problems. also, we currently are limited to only full service and I am very aware that the sky isn't falling. so why are you suggesting that im claiming the sky is falling?
This might happen around the same time the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania gives up its monopoly on liquor sales and stops allowing the sale of illegal fireworks to NJ residents.

Today, for fun, I timed how long it took for me to get gas at a popular station in Central Jersey. I pulled up at 5:47 and pulled out at 5:50. And that was with the attendant making small talk with me and with someone at a pump ahead of me.
I don't know what sort of gas stations people are going to that complain about long lines and wasted time but maybe go to another station?
As pointed out 2 pages ago the bill was killed before it even got to the Senate. its over for now.every few years it gets taken up and killed pretty quickly.
I want you to know that I really appreciate your sense of humor, Jay, but I'm not sure that everyone else..."gets it".
I can't can't give him another point. He's funny. I like funny.
