i also found the screen too busy with a bunch of useless icons. not just for cops but also for other users and various traffic things. i prefer the simple display of google maps where the roads is either yellow or red depending on additional traffic and i like to use the satellite for my display not the map view (not sure if thats an option on waze). i did get 6 points though for telling waze i was in stand still traffic and another user thanked me for my input.
Don't use Waze for mapping, it gave me some crazy route in Jackson that took me to a dead end spot. You can run both Google Nav and Waze just have Waze warn you in the background.

It's hard to do this when you're driving, which is why I usually have my wife run Waze as my navigator and I keep Google Nav running on my phone.

You can modify settings to clear some of the clutter off the display.

Regarding routing choices, there is some lag in reacting to traffic (or it clearing up) so it sometimes might make some choices like you describe.

Overall, I find waze very good, especially when I am familiar with my basic route and might need options to get around traffic. I prefer google map's simplicity if I'm going somewhere for the first time.

i feel like google maps has very up to date info because so many people are feeding it information on their location. but if waze is owned by google, maybe they are using the same info. but im pretty sure google maps wouldnt have sent me off those 2 exists that waze did today. i oversee offices in bronx, queens, staten island and im based on brooklyn so i drive all over nyc, google maps has been awesome. at first, i hesitated to follow it but now i always do whatever it says and whenever it says a faster route has come up, i accept the new route.

Rule of thumb is use google if the route doesn't involve a lot of side street traffic. Waze is better for navigating city street routes and other road hazards.

Personally I think Waze underestimates total drive time whereas google overestimates -- my experience at least.

Go to settings and turn off all the "useless things".

These are not real moving violations they are exploiting poor road designs and lack of signs.
You're right; it's not actually a moving violation to cross a solid white line.

Cops pulling people over is directly proportional to nice weather. Ever see a cop pull anyone over in the rain, or when it's 3 degrees out? Rarely. They don't want to get wet or be cold. When it's summer and beautiful out, all of a sudden they care about highway safety

Has anyone seen the 2015 Chevy Caprice Cop cars? not the marked ones the unmarked ones that are all black with a Ghost Sticker on the door? It's hard to see until it hits the right angle and then you see the NJSP logo on the side door pop. It even says State Police on the fender but you can't see that either until you get the correct angle as well. I never trust any Chevy, Ford, or Dodge with tints and black wheels. Sometimes they even have better models to look like a normal car.

Fun Fact:
Those "Chevy" police cars actually Holdens, made in Australia.
Yes, our esteemed governor--who is running for POTUS--apparently approves of buying police cars that are made overseas.

Wouldn't it be nice if he tried to employ more Americans, rather than more Australians?

Getting off topic here but the foreign car companies have factory's in the U.S, does that make them an American car? lol.

The Chevy SS is also made there since it is the civilian version of the Caprice, which by the way is actually a Pontiac G4 re-badged as a Chevy since there is no more Pontiac.
