Having only lived here since August, I'll say:

Bagels: Bagels-4-U in Springfield

Grocery store: Whole Foods in Union

Mexican: El Matador in Bloomfield

Frankly, usually when we want to have good food, we go into the city. Thanks for the long list though.
There's also a Bagels 4 U in Kenilworth and it's one of my favorites. I also love Bagel Chateau in Westfield and Manhattan Bagel, I frequent the Westfield and Union locations.

And a new Whole Foods in Clark which I'm obsessed with!

Basilicos in Millburn

Tre Piani in Princeton

Don Pepe in Newark

Hunan Taste in Denville

Not too many because I usually eat out in NYC or Philly. Also, my favorite pizza place closed.

Have not been to Don Pepe in a while. There is a Portuguese section of Newark with cool restaurants, Don Pepe is closer to major highways and the center. I do not think it's the best Portuguese eatery, it's just the closest one and the most commercialized.

do try the Millburn Deli next door to that overpriced pizza place

Some good places here, go to Bangkok Garden all the time, Matisse is obviously excellent

Three other suggestions:

Kosher Style Deli: Foster Village, Bergenfield
Pizza: Victors, Teaneck
Burger: Black Rebel Burger, Wood-Ridge, place is about a year old, unbelievable!

I like the focus on places that make NJ unique.

The section of Newark is called the Ironbound.

I'm Portuguese and live in the Ironbound, the best large Portuguese restaurants are Fernandes Steak House, Fornos and Sol Mar. Don Pepe is not a place I'd go to.

A popular hole in the wall is Portugalia Restaurant.

There's a big Mexican or Tex-Mex place on US1 just shy of US9 in Woodbridge thats very popular called Jose Tejas, the restaurant with the big "EAT" sign outside, and they have another on US 46 up around Wayne.

We usually call ahead to see if there's a long wait or not. A half hour or less is good.

Quite a few years ago, I stopped going to Don Pepe, as it was just too commercial and frenetic, and the food was not as good as it had been a few decades ago. Instead, I began going to Casa Vasca, on Elm Street. However, my current favorite Down Neck restaurant is Seabra's Marisqueria.

Whoa. We had the same place in Boston except it was called the Border Cafe. (also with a big "EAT" sign) I just googled it and it seems they are indeed one and the same restaurant!

If they really do have the same menu, it's fantastic. Their blackened catfish fajita is incredible.
