Demonstrating cataclysmic brainlessness, the intransigent collectivist Local 54 labor mob refused to look at the broader economy, refused to consider economic reality, and refused to work. Now, their members will be unemployed and starving. And they will deserve it because they did it to themselves. They never learn, and they never will.

Atlantic City is disgusting. The whole town should be scrapped.
This has very little to do with the unions. The taj has been a dump for a log time, way before the unions went on strike. They were already losing money and have declared bankruptcy several times, also before the union went on strike. While all other casinos have posted profits throughout the years, for the past several, they were the lone loser. Again, before the strikes. It was only a matter of time, and they probably should have closed long ago, maybe back in 2014 with the others.
This is pretty much how any union operates. They are essentially bullies and expect to have any demand met, even when it defies reality or common sense.
A few years ago in my town there were budget cuts in the police dept. The town proposed that all officers take a pay freeze for a year or two, otherwise they would have to lay off a number of officers to meet the budget. Of course the union did not agree to the pay freeze and a bunch of officers ended up losing their job.
Years ago my wife had a union job at a hospital. Many of the people she worked with were terrible workers - showing up to work late (or not at all), doing a poor job, etc. The day came when budget cuts required the hospital to lay off several staff members. Well because the union only looked at seniority, these bad workers got to keep their job while some of the best workers lost their jobs simply because the union rules stated that employees would have to be cut based on years of seniority. Job performance was no factor in the decision. Clearly this made no sense.

It's always easy to blame the unions, I can't blame them for not wanting to work for starvation wages. A few years ago Hostess bakeries closed because the bakers union didn't want to take a 2nd round of pay cuts. I really think they saw the hand writing on the wall and figured if the took the second round of pay cuts it wouldn't be long before they'd be asking them to take a third or go out of business anyway. So Hostess closed, blamed the "union thugs", but guess what? All the managers walked away with million dollar "golden parachutes", funny how that works.

Unions came about because of sweat shop labor practices. In you example above it sounds like bad management, if people come to work late, or don't show up, they CAN be fired! Yes the union may try to fight it, but if managers had their "ducks in a row", time cards, etc. documenting the lates or unauthorized absences the union would lose at arbitration. It sounds more like the employer wasn't a good one either. Granted it is harder to get rid of someone for job performance but that also protects the long time worker who's just gotten older and at 55 can't work like a 25yr old. So there is good and bad to unions. My experience has been better pay, benefits, and working conditions with unions.

Devils advocate: From the perspective of the officers still employed the union tactics work. Nobody wants to see a pay cut or lose benefits so sacrificing a few junior employees seems fair game for the senior ranks.
