Hello,
My husband and I are planning on moving from Yorktown VA to Jersey with our two children. They will be five and less than a year old when we plan to move. We also own a chihuahua.
We are moving because the only reason we moved to VA was because my husband was stationed here. Now that he is no longer in the military we want to move to closer to family who live in NYC.
We plan on working and living in NJ as with two small children commuting to and from the city would be a little too much especially with traffic.
We plan on renting at first until we can save money to buy. The cost of living in NJ is what makes us a little nervous. It seems you can't get anything decent below $2000/month and thats only a 2 bedroom. I currently work as an RN and I have no idea how much NJ pays nurses so budget wise we only have what VA pays to go on. My husband can transfer within the company he works for but again we do not know the pay difference. VA pay does not allow for $2000/month rent, not even close.
The areas we are currently looking at are East Brunswick, Sayreville, Freehold. I do now know much about other cities/counties but know we are to be at least within an hour from the city. We want decent schools for our children as well as safe neighborhoods. It would be nice to live an area with other children and other working families. Proximity to hospitals is also something I am looking at though not as important as schools and safety.
We were also looking at the Marlton area but its a little further from the city than we would like.

Three things that are most important
1) Safety
2)Schools
3)Proximity to the city

Any suggestions on other cities/counties that are decently priced to live in with good schools and that are safe would be awesome as we really do not about other places in NJ other than what my father suggested. Also, if anyone happens to know the pay for expereinced nurses in NJ, I would appreciate that information so we could make a better guess on what we can afford..

Thank You

Default I have no idea how much NJ pays nurses

My niece just started nursing and makes 50 bucks an hour. 12 hour shifts 3 times a week in New Brunswick.

You need to narrow down your places to look at once you get a better handle on the "lay of the land". Marlton for instance is closer to Philly than NYC, geographically speaking. Many places, some more built up, others further from the cities are obviously more spread out. also need to fig out around where you are working for starters.

That's where the issue is. I don't even know where to apply because I'm not sure of how much I will be getting paid to even know where we can afford to look. *cry*

You might get some idea from a relocation calculator such as:
Cost of living: How far will my salary go in another city? - CNNMoney

And an idea of nursing salaries:

OP dont do it. If you want a life, then stay in VA.

However, if you enjoy working to pay your bill and tax, welcome to NJ.

Lol. We have no life here. No family no friends no nothing. All the areas with good schools out here require an income that's ridiculous to make unless you inherit millions.

how close do you want to be to city? the towns mentioned are central nj, not really close to nyc and
would be a hard commute, north jersey would be better if you are actually going to commute to nyc
also more heavily populated part of the state with more hospitals.

$50 a hour is probably for per diem work, although if you have experience you should be able to find a job
