Calico696, The point is you were 14!
Since you all are so "sincerely" interested in understanding about Jewishness, get this! Judge's comment about entitlement says it all. It's the same libel we've been hearing for oh I dunno, 4,000 years or so.
Pick up a history book and you'll see why we are just a tad touchy (the favorite "justification" of the bigoted) when someone asks questions "In maybe an insensitive way." No excuse. Too many times have those questions been a prelude to genocide. It read, "not in my neighborhood, and too bad so sad, you're in America now."
Judge, you also made my point. NJ is full of Jews, if you as an adult don't know those basic things, where have you been? Not all of us take our cultural clues from movies. Maybe you need to get out of the dark and into the real world and meet a few different people, not just broad stereotypes of the sort you see in such movies as Caddyshack. I assume the "Francis" remark also comes from some movie? I have no idea what that means.
Lighten up. You are starting an arguement with a nameless, faceless person on an anonymous message board. You obviously were not held enough as a child, I'll call you a shrink.
How could I be so stupid? If I don't want to be your friend I must be a hateful, snob and of course you're entitled to a detailed explanation of why not.

Wow...I was only trying to point out that it is interesting to learn about different people, cultures, religions and backgrounds. My mentioning about being 14 before I ever met a Jewish person, was simply to show that a lot of us grow up surrounded by only our own "type" so to speak. When we grow up, we come to find that there are many different "types" of people in the world. I personally find it interesting to learn about them and don't judge anyone by what they believe or where the come from. Unfortunately, that is not the way of the world. I'm starting to think my Dad was right when he said "don't ever get in the middle of a discussion about religion or politics".
What a very entertaining thread. There are so many things to reply to that it's probably best not to reply at all.
I also enjoyed the "Stripes" reference.
