I want to work in the city and live in a smaller town. Edison NJ seems ideal for me. 45 minute train ride into Penn Station, and has a place where I can affordably have a dog in the yard, and a place to ride my bicycle that's not in city traffic. Also very safe, it mate #28 on the best small towns from cnn/money mag.

Can you please tell me other cities that have a similar profile to Edison in that regard?

Ideally I would like to live within walking or biking distance from the train station, or have easy access to a shuttle service.

Also if you could suggest rental homes or apartments from $1000 to $1500 that would be great?

Thank you!

Edison is nice, as are Cranford, Madison and Summit. These are nice walking towns; other nice towns are not so good for walking along the downtown areas. But after living in that area for more than 10 years, I discovered Morris County, which is more suburbanly charming. Morristown is the urbanish center (right next to Madison), and if you don't mind a one hour train ride Denville is a very safe and cute small town. But, I would also highly recommend Montclair, which is actually my favorite town in NJ. It's close to the city and is like a miniature version of it, with lots of diversity in the people (who are mostly high income earners) and in restaurants as well as cultural events. If I would be able to afford living anywhere in this state, it would be there. You should be able to find some reasonable rents if you look hard enough. Happy moving!

Cranford, Garwood, Westfield have some apartments in that price range. Small town feel and ambiance. This actually puts you a little closer for the commute. Where are you moving from?
