Note that my comment as to personally finding many lakes kind of gross is for swimming. Boating or just living on is a different story. But overall, you'll find better lakes and lake communities as you go further north and west, anyway.

I love Pines Lake, it was one my favorite spots when I was small and my family lived nearby, in Riverdale.

Ringwood has various lake communities, wonderful town to live in! House prices are reasonable but taxes are high. 35 miles from the city.

Try Budd Lake. It's about an hour from NYC and it's in a quiet corner of Morris County.

Please see Post #9. They need a town to which her husband can commute for work. Budd lake is nice, and you MIGHT be able to drive to the city in a little more than an hour on weekends or in the middle of the day, but commuting will be closer to 90 minutes or 2 hours, depending upon where in the city he has to go.

I'm not sure about the OP, but some city people seem to think NJ is "the country" and don't really understand the population density or the reality of commuting time. It's best to be honest with them about it, IMO.

So, Mountain Lakes, then. Bring your huge sack of cash, because you can't buy real estate with American Express.

Exactly! There's also the Ramsey Country Club.

And there are homes on the lakes in Franklin Lakes, too.

Or Shadow Lake in Wyckoff.

I had a boat, put it at a marina in Lake Hopatcong. After the summer I sold the boat and never went back to the lake.. The weekend boat traffic on that lake isn't much different then the traffic on the turnpike. I never felt safe taking that boat out unless it was a weekday morning.

There's a couple of small ones in Short Hills, too, but I imagine houses on them don't come up for sale often.
