If you all are ever in North Jersey, the best bakery I have ever been to is Patisserie St. Michel in Teaneck. Run by a 70-ish baker born, raised, and trained in France (with the accent to prove it) and his wife, this place makes the most incredible cakes I have ever eaten. You know they're not using "Bettercreme" in their stuff. In fact, I think I read once that they use eggs from their own chickens (!) in their cakes. (How's that for bad a- baking?) They ain't cheap, but once you try their stuff you'll understand why.
They don't have a website, but here's a great article with pictures from some years back:
Don't wait too long to go, though. Rumors have been circulating for the past several years that they're going to be closing the shop to retire. Get there while you can!
I'd actually like to find a place that makes great Portugese egg tarts, aka Pastel de Nata. I think there are some NYC Chinatown bakeries that have them but are there any in north Jersey?
Look along Ferry Street in Newark or along Harrison Ave in Harrison.
