That is funny, why mob care more about Portuguese businesses than any other? Apparently all the other white ethnicities including Italian left for greener pastures.
I hope the new movie Many Saints of Newark touches on this, and goes into the Ironbound.
I am assuming if the rumor was true, the mob would have also protected the North Ward.
Keep in mind, the North Ward stayed heavily Italian in the 70s, even after the riots.
Its not... the train tracks acted as a barrier so it was easy for the police and national guard to block the rioters from crossing over to the Ironbound... it's the same reason most of North Newark didnt suffer the same way the central, west, and South Wards suffered as those neighborhoods dont have many barriers keeping them separate from the rest of the city.
Interesting observation.
This explains why the Ironbound and the North Ward have such a different feel to them than the other parts of Newark.
The Ironbound is separated from the rest of the city by the NJ Transit RR and the North Ward by I-280.
Also, this is probably why the ethnic makeup of the Ironbound, which is strongly Lusophone, and the North Ward, a predominately Latinx neighborhood, differ from much of the rest of Newark.

Not Portuguese more than "any other", just simple and pure business.
The *mob* or whatever despite depictions otherwise are often practical minded businessmen. Some of the few things the Sopranos got right is that Tony S., Johnny "Sacks", and a few others earned because they knew how to run a business.
If you have tenants paying their rent, good customers why would you want them to leave? More to the point one of the supposed reasons for getting into bed with the "mob" is that you are paying for "protection" from a host of perils.
Furthermore Portuguese like Spaniards are European, which puts them pretty much on same level as Italians. You could throw a few South American nations into that mix, in fact large parts of the populations of Argentina, Brazil and a few other places down there are of Italian descent, some of them quite recent. This all could be seen as making Portuguese worthy of protection from the animals rioting elsewhere.

Up until his “suicide” in 1959, the biggest mob boss in Newark was not Italian, but a Jewish guy named Zwillman. He was found hanged in his home in West Orange, shortly before he was supposed to testify at a senate hearing. Rumor had it, that Meyer Lansky gave the Italians his blessing to kill his long time friend and associate before the hearing. (Much like he did with your namesake) Although there were signs his wrists had been tied up before the hanging, it was ruled a suicide.
At that point, Ruggiero “Richie The Boot” Boiardo, of the Genovese crime family, became the boss of Newark. There has been a lot of speculation that Tony Soprano was inspired by DeCavalcante family boss, Vincent Palermo, but in reality, he was inspired by Boiardo. You would think that speculation would have been put to rest, when the guy who actually WROTE The Sopranos, came out and said that he modeled Tony after Boiardo, not Palermo, but for some reason, the speculation persists.
