I have not heard many good things about the area.
I live about 30 minutes north and I have never heard of anyone around here looking to move to Mystic Islands, and one person that I knew who lived there really hated it.

Here's a small story.. about 6 weeks ago I was driving down route 9 and drove thru mystic island. I saw a sign for "mystic casino island" or something like that so I followed the sign to check it out.... I was gullible and expected to see a hotel near the ocean or something like that.. but was a diner type building that looked like an old crab shack! A lot of elder people. I haven't seen much of it but i don't think it's very mystic or even an island lol, tuckerton also sucks, it's basicly a swamp area near the ocean, there's no sandy beach that I've seen. It's quite a bit south of seaside heights in an unpopulated area.

Mystic is very swampy and not to desireable. Also the green-head flies will practically make a meal of your body.

A friend lives there on one of the canals and I can only agree with you 100% about the green-heads. There are also the no-see-ums which will bite you to death. There are few decent restaurants in the area and little activities. The beach at the end of Osborne Island is small with limited parking.

I live about 10 minutes from there. It's a very quiet little seashore town that doesn't look like it's near the ocean. There's a few scenic spots, mostly just lGreat Bay Blvd and towards the end of Radio Rd, but besides that, it is a boring rural town that is just like any of the other little towns in the area (little egg harbor, tuckerton, and others). If you're looking for a quiet place to live, then you'd like it. If you're looking for something that is nice, charming fun, and has a seashore atmosphere, then stay away. There aren't a lot of businesses and it's basically the middle of nowhere. I hate it and all the other towns in most of Ocean County. You would never think you were near the shore being in these redneck towns.
