They weren't hiding them, I just didn't see them. If you look at the picture in the link I posted, you'll see what I mean. You'd have to look up and I don't tend to do that when I'm driving.
You don't have to see them. They just have to be able to see you.
It's just like on the GSP after you come southbound off the Driscoll bridge. If you need to pay cash, which obviously isn't going to be an option much longer, you veer off to the right to go through the booths, but the "EZ-Pass" express cars are all going under the gantries with the cameras and transponder readers. You barely notice that they are there, unless, of course, you once worked for a transportation agency and had to read and edit documents about AET for years...

I am well aware of the system. The only cashless systems I had been through to that point were visible. That's all.

I'm not familiar at all with that bridge, and when I clicked on it, I didn't see any picture of the actual bridge now but there was an interesting video about how they are replacing it. I guess that's why there is a toll now. They should have at least had a sign letting you know! But wondering also where the reader/cameras were if you couldn't see it.

The picture they had is gone, but this is what street view shows. I didn't recognize those white things as cameras. Coming the other direction of course, there's nothing.
Just be glad they haven't decide to charge people how much you drive your car yet. In Europe some countries charge you a tax based on how many miles you drive a year.

Ridiculous that were letting this happen. I was up in Massachusetts 6 months ago and was on Mass Pike for what used to be a 50 cent toll. The toll booths were gone and received an invoice for around $52. The break down was 50 cent toll, $1.50 service charge and $50 for being out of state. I wrote them a check for 50 cents and they hit me with an extra $50 for being late. Over my dead body will they get any money from me.
This is for the whole NYS Thruway system. Cameras are taking photos of your license plates and mailing you bills of the amount you owe for use of the Thruway. I have received 2 bills so far (they are mailed once a month) and now, they are including a $2.00 processing fee with the bill. This shoud be stopped.
When the Thruway was first built, the fees were charged to build the highway. Once the highway was completed, we were told the fees would stop. As you can see, that didn't happen. Now they are saying they need to charge fees to maintain the highway.
Now they (probably, IDK) laid off all their toll collectors and are mailing or using EZ pass money for the toll collections. My 2 tolls were 28 cents and 35 cents but I had to pay an extra $4.00 for the "processing fee". Imagine the amount of money NYS is collecting on this scam. I'm willing to bet it's a lot with $2.00 added on for each toll charge that people are being billed for AND, it's not just people living in NYS but travelers as well from other states. (Who, I'm sure, will just pay w/o questions)
Btw, if you pay late, they not only add fat "extra fees" to your bill but can suspend your vehicle registration.
Move out of the northeast. Most of the country is free to drive in.
There are about 35 States in the US with toll roads including Texas and Florida.
