Does this mean everything east of Hamilton Street should be avoided, or even streets west of Hamilton St. are unsafe as well?
Areas closer to New Brunswick are usually undesirable by growing families (I don't know what your situation is) because its mostly rutgers students living in denser areas and commuters who have to be closer to the northeast corridor rail. If you are neither, you can do much better in area northwest of franklin blvd & hamilton st. southwest is mostly agricultural and there are homes but most likely pretty expensive because of the larger lots. That being said, anything east of franklin & hamilton is not exactly desirable for a property purchase (atleast to me) unless the city has some future improvement plans in the works. So, you are exactly at the border of desirable and undesirable areas and might be able to get away with it depending on how good the deal is.

Jersey rapper 'E-9' shot dead at hair salon in Franklin Township

Authorities have identified the man shot and killed at Somerset Street's Nu Trendz Hair Salon Sunday as 28-year-old Eric Andrews Jr. of New Brunswick.

News 12 quoted a friend of Andrews' saying he was shot after an argument at Nu Trendz — but authorities have not made any statement about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Andrews was also known as E-9, and was part of a rap duo along with longtime friend George Opoku, also known as 6FO. The two were scheduled to perform at SOB's in New York on Tuesday.

The shooting location is on 563 Somerset Street, Route 27, about a mile from New Brunswick station.
