(am I demanding too much now?).. my companys offices are close to the princeton forrestal village.. thanks a lot for your advice!
Isabelle- Princeton Forrestal Village is actually in Plainsboro, NJ (off RT 1). The only housing close to Forrestal is Princeton Landing (also in Plainsboro) a subdivision of townhomes and semi's. Princeton Landing is about 2 miles from Forrestal Village.
Without car travel, it will be difficult to get from Princeton to Forrestal and would require transferring buses.
What we did when we moved here was to stay at an extended stay type hotel (there are several in the area- with kitchen facilities) and toured around the area to find the town that suited our needs.
It is so difficult to get a feel for the place when you are so far away.
Good Luck!

To the OP: the only areas with 24 hour public transportation to NYC are those areas serviced by the Path train (kind of like a subway): Jersey City, Hoboken, Newark, and Harrison. I *think* Union City offers a 24-hour bus, but someone else can probably confirm. Although many other cities are serviced by NJ Transit trains & buses, these do not run 24 hours into NYC. They usually stop around 1:30 AM and resume at 5 AM or so.

Unfortunately, your commute from any of these places to Princeton would be pretty much horrific. They are all within 45 minutes of NYC, though.
