I think you need to expand that to the tri-state area, because you can absolutely get a fresh, tasty kaiser roll in NYC.

Thanks! That's close enough for me to try out, and I definitely will.

Unfortunately, it's true. Though, while I'm up north, I still see far more kids playing outside. Perhaps it's the heat here - but even in "winter", when it's tolerable, the kids stay inside. When I moved here from Michigan, it was a huge shock that I couldn't make any friends that wanted to play outside...so, I played outside by myself, roller skating, biking, going for walks, whatever I could find. The only time I really see kids outside is if they are swimming (the younger children), or if at a summer camp.

Bacon and sausage, while they can be used in a sandwich, are mostly better for use outside of a sandwich. I guess transplants figure it's just another salty pork breadfast meat, but we don't see it as an alternative to bacon or sausage - the taste is way too different. IMHO, nothing beats a bacon egg and cheese sandwich with crispy bacon. I've tried taylor ham on a sandwich and while it beats no salty meat at all, I'd MUCH rather have some crispy bacon or a breakfast sausage patty. Kaiser rolls are everywhere btw. One of the golf courses I play at only has taylor ham for breakfast and not bacon and it pisses me off.

Taylor ham just ain't that great. I realize you're from NJ and have a bias. But if TH were really that great, don't you think it would have spread far and wide like my friends bacon and sausage? Hawaiians might think that spam is the greatest food on earth but that don't make it so.

Paramus Hot Bagels, Rt. 17, next to Dunkin Donuts, near the entrance to Paramus Park. I have yet to try a bagel better than their veggie bagel, it's phenomenal. There's another hot bagels place almost right across 17 from this one, and it's excellent also. Then there's Bagel Buffet in Secaucus, but I haven't been there in years and I've heard it's not as good as it once was.
I agree that the NY metro region, including NJ has a lot of good bagel places. One of my favorite post-bar foods in hoboken used to be an everything bagel w/ jalepeno cream cheese from bagels on the hudson. The guy that worked there was a serious crackhead but who else can you get to run an all night bagel joint. There's a great place up in Edgewater and Rt. 5 I used to go to that makes great BEC bagel sandwiches.

And just because you don't like it does not make it so either.

I could rattle off a bunch of regional things that don't make it far and wide...doesn't mean they don't taste great.

Obviously not everyone will agree. I think if you were a born and bred New Jerseyan you'd have the taste for TH. The bigger point is that bacon is not comparable to Taylor ham, even if it seems like it "on paper". Yes, bacon and Taylor ham are both fried, salty pork breakfast items. That would suggest a similarity in their taste, as there is a similarity between bacon and sausage, but in reality Taylor ham doesn't taste like bacon or sausage. To compare TH to bacon is comparing apples and oranges. It's like comparing NY pizza to Chicago deep-dish pizza - they are completely different and shouldn't be compared.

Bacon is difficult to enjoy on a sandwich. It is strips, so it is not evenly distributed on the sandwich, so you end up with bites of egg and cheese with no bacon and other bites with mostly bacon (including the extra part that sticks out of the end). Bacon is better on a plate. It's better on a burger, too. But on an egg and cheese and kaiser roll, with some ketchup and black pepper, nothing beats Taylor Ham!

And Kaiser rolls are everywhere but then again so are bagels. Still, I don't bother trying to eat either one outside of NJ or NY; definitely not outside of the northeast. NJ Kaiser rolls are a thing of Beauty, a perfect masterpiece!

Well, NJ is a great state, so you would think that people far and wide would realize it and not call NJ "the armpit of the nation" or othewise bash it. But they do think NJ is horrible. So, apparently people far and wide are susceptible to having bad taste! It's no wonder they don't understand the best breakfast in the WORLD - Taylor Ham, egg, and cheese on a Kaiser roll with black pepper and ketchup!

Oh my! This is like food porn!!! But look at that thing, it is AMAZING! PHENOMENAL!

Since you don't eat the THEC, that means there is enough for one extra for me, so tommorrow morning I will buy the THEC that would be yours and I will eat it in your honor, my friend! DEEEE-LISH!!!

Jalapeno cream cheese is a good call!

I will scout out the place in Edgewater - thanks for the tip! My Church is in Ridgefield Park so maybe I'll check it out after church one Sunday instead of Hiram's for hot dogs, as is my usual routine. I'll do a THEC on a sesame bagel and then take a half-dozen home to try with cream cheese and butter (not at the same time, of course).

THEC on a roll, no ketchup, no salt, no pepper, and Disco fries is my NJ breakfast of champions.

The level of analysis you're putting into Taylor Ham is borderline absurd, especially in the way you seemingly dismiss anyone who doesn't agree that THEC is the only viable breakfast choice. I'm a "born and bred New Jerseyan", to use your phrase, and I don't particularly care for pork roll (yes, it's called "pork roll")- I prefer a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich. I guess that disqualifies me as a "born and bred New Jerseyan", since I don't "have the taste for taylor ham"......

I love the "but taylor ham doesn't taste like bacon or sausage" part, too. Bacon doesn't taste like sausage, and sausage doesn't taste like bacon, so why would one ever expect pork roll to taste like either of them? Should I expect a filet mignon to taste like hamburger just because they're both beef?

You mention that bacon doesn't work on an egg sandwich because it's not evenly distributed on the sandwich, but you say it's better on a burger. Wouldn't the same issue occur on a burger? Maybe pork roll is the right item to put on your burgers??

On top of that we have awesome bagels, as good as NY City. But beyond that, the "buttered roll" is definitely a NJ phenomenon. I always thought it's such a simple thing, a roll with butter on it, that it must be common across the country. But when I started traveling, I realized that, outside of NJ, 7-11's and similar stores didn't have such a thing. I one time asked for a buttered roll at a cafe/deli in Seattle and the person said, "Just BUTTER on a ROLL? Really?" He thought it was so odd, and I was equally stunned at his reaction. It wasn't that good, though, because it wasn't a kaiser roll. The excellent Seattle coffee made up for it, though; they do have incredibly awesome coffee.

Anyway, I'm going to leave 1/2 hour early tomorrow morning so I can stop by the diner to pick up a Taylor Ham, egg, and cheese, since I'm now craving one.
Only one thing missing from this perfect breakfast... "side of french fries with gravy"
