I recently moved and had to switch from Cablevision to Comcast. Cablevision said I had 30 days from the time I disconnected service to bring back the equipment. If I didn't, I owed them $350. I brought it back on time and have the receipt.
A few weeks later, I get a bill from a collection agency for the $350. What's the best way to handle this? Thanks.
Go back to Cablevision with the receipt showing you are in good standing and that the bill is incorrect. Have cablevision give you something in writing that protects you so that collections doesn't have to harass you any longer. All else fails, contact the BBB and report Cablevision and go from there.
I agree with the above, but I would also write a registered letter to Cablevision with a copy to the collection agency if they don't clear up the matter and your credit report in 10 days you will sue them for harassment.
If they don't cooperate, contact the local news public consumer program and make a big deal.
Just fax a letter stating that you are disputing the charge with the reason & a copy of the receipt to the collection agency. Save the sent receipt from the fax machine for your record that it was sent successfully. Good luck.
I had the same problem when I moved to Edison. In my case I did go beyond the 30 days but I did eventually return the equipment. I simply sent a copy of the receipt from cablevision to the collection agency and all went away.

I would show the collection agency the receipt. You might want to check your credit report too.
The nerve of them, charging people for something that is free from thin air.
You're kidding, right?
