I went to my first Aldi's a few weeks back. I went to the one in Rockaway. It was pretty cool. I always pictured the store being some massive 100,000+ sq. ft. monster. So it shocked me that the store was so small. Maybe around 10,000 sq. ft., if that.

All of a sudden today, it hit me. Bergen County has a great location for an Aldi's... the former Grand Union/Rite-Aid store site in Fair Lawn!

Why is this the perfect location?

1. The store is the right size, about 10,000 or 11,000 sq. ft.

2. The Radburn area desperately needs a grocery store of some kind, but there really aren't any locations to support a full-size supermarket.

3. The store has its own parking lot. While not huge, I think it could be adequate.

4. There a pretty large population of frugal people in Fair Lawn who would go crazy over Aldi's bargains.

5. The area and town are nice enough that frugal people from the nearby highbrow towns wouldn't mind shopping there, while being unpretentious enough that the people from the nearby lowbrow towns wouldn't feel uncomfortable shopping there either.

6. The location is centralized within Fair Lawn, and fairly centralized within Bergen County.

7. The store's empty now!

I was really wondering how they could use that space now that the Rite-Aid has closed. And I think this could be a great solution!

So what do you Bergen Countyers think? Am I on to something or am I nuts?

I never heard of Aldi's before. I am surprised that store is still vacant. You would think it would be a prime location, especially next to the train station.

I think it's a great idea! I just moved out of Bergen County to Monmouth, but you are right, the assumption that everyone in Bergen is rich and need more Kings and Whole Foods is ridiculous. My sister's in Fair Lawn and she's squeezing every dollar she has to stay afloat right now.

That's a great location right next to the Radburn train station, too.

By the way, I never heard of Aldi's until I moved down here.
