Hello,
I will be travelling through NJ in a few days and am looking for a good recommendation for a stopping point along route 22 in central NJ. Nothing too expensive, but maybe a notch up from TGI Fridays.

I was looking into stopping at Famous Dave's.....anyone have any other suggestions?

You have Olive Garden, Spanish Tavern and a few Steakhouses, so you will have a wide variety to choose from.

You didn't mention a town, and there about 4000 choices between Routes 287 and Newark.

One I like is Mosaico in Mountainside, a bit more pricey but great lunch food and service. Not a chain like TGIF. Further east than Famous Daves and on the other side of the highway (westbound).

Famous Dave's is like a Bennigan's only with BBQ. Not exactly fine dining but decent. Used to be a Steak and Ale.

I enjoy the Hibachi at Shogun in...Green Brook, I think. A little pricier (read: after drink, tax, and tip you're probably looking at ~$30/person).

*Ugh*

What a waste of time, coming to NJ and eating at Famous Daves.

I'm a big time foodie and hate to hear stories of people visiting NYC and eating at McDonald's, Friday's, and the Olive Garden. Out of all the hundreds of amazing eateries in the city with stoic histories and rave reviews, you had to eat at a chain restaurant available in Anywhere, USA?

On Rt 22 in Bridgewater is the Bridgewater Commons Mall. Just outside the Mall, is a little strip mall called "The Village at Bridgewater Commons." Maggianos Little Italy is in the Village. (There's also a Starbucks and a Chipotle Mexican Grill) It's big, a little noisy, (in a good way so long as you aren't looking for a private romantic setting,) and has pretty good Italian food. If you are going with more than three people, try the family dining option. It's a great deal. Choose 2 appetizers, 2 salads, 2 entrees, 2 pastas, and 2 deserts. Have all you can eat of each.
The only downside is that you may need a reservation.

If you want much better food, go a little further east on Rt. 22, make a right at Thompson Ave, then a right onto Union Ave (Rt. 28) and stop in at Girasole Italian Grill. Really good, if a little pricey. Excellent service too, and it's a BYO, so you can have your favorite bottle of wine with dinner and not pay an arm & a leg for it.

Don't do that.....

If you want something other than franchised BBQ, and something more authentic to New Jersey specifically, try 28 Barbecue in Bound Brook.

Authentic Portuguese Churrasqueira

I have a friend who lives in Tewksbury nearby and swears by this place. I think he told me it's a cash only place, but if you are a fan of Churrascaria style barbecue, it sounds like a great destination.

Olive Garden, TGI Friday's, etc = generic dogfood. You'll notice the best food joints are always the dark hard-to-see bandboxes that look like dives.

The thousands of people who wait in line to eat at the Olive Garden don't know nothing about Italian food. There are hundreds of Italian restaurants in NJ with no waiting and plenty of open tables. Plus you get to watch the Guido with the muscle shirt toss the dough up to the ceiling and almost hit the fan. Now that's real Italian, entertainment plus all the red sauce and pasta you could want.
