Be careful you don't fool yourself into thinking the D.C. Republicans wouldn't love to jump onto that wagon themselves. (That percentage actually rose to 49% under Bush in 2008.) Unfortunately, I see both parties are merely two sides of the same coin.

If (when?) we ever get to that point it'll simply be a race to see who can give away the store and buy more votes the fastest.

You do realize that there are other ways to "give back" without Uncle Sam serving as the gun-to-your-head facilitator, right? I've always found giving directly to those in need to be much more effective, not to mention appreciated and fulfilling. It wasn't that long ago in our nation's history that having the government serve as the primary source of assistance was the aberration, not the norm.

As I understand it, 75-80% of current millionaires** are first generation (non-inherited) rich. I found the following article quite interesting; perhaps you will too...

The Millionaire Next Door

(I just discovered that the link above may ask you for a NYT login. Sorry!)

(**I realize that one does not need to be a millionaire to be considered rich or wealthy; just trying to provide an easily relatable point of reference.)

I am always amazed at those who say "hey you out there, you workied hard for your education and you worked hard to succeed in life now it is time to give it to those who have chosen to sit on their butts and do nothing. " Even more, what about those who worked hard to build a small business, just to be taxed out of business?

Nita
Why don't you look up socialism and communism in the dictionary, then you will know that it's neither.

Republican smoke screen, to call anyone who doesn't subscribe to the "trickle-down theory" of economics, as Socialists or Communists.

Why?

Why not just lower rates for lower incomes?

People that don't pay anything don't feel that they have a stake.
Because of that, they don't care if money is wasted on stuff.
( Insert definition of "stuff" here. )

"stuff": Food stamps, WIC, medicaid, head start, section 8 housing.

I believe everyone should be taxed based on wealth. There should be no tax cap at any level of government. Everyone should pay a fair share. I don't mind paying my taxes, and anyone else that uses highways, the rail runner, airports, healthcare, education, should not mind either.

Most people agree with you except for those who think like socialists. I would love to just see a flat tax, cut and dry. This is the fair way for everyone.

I think socialists generally believe in taxation as well, generally along the lines we agree on. There is not a major socialist movement in the United States and hasn't been since the early 1900's. Canada's NDP is probably the only social activist party in North America that comes to mind. Being fair, I think just about every political party/movement favors taxation in some form.. Just for the fact that an industrial society cannot exist without them... Just my thought on it.

Again, with the socialist comment. It's really getting old. Plus, the idea of a flat tax..everyone paying their fare share, is a lot more like socialism than the proportional tax we have now, with all of its loopholes for the wealthy.

Not a proponent of flat tax unless there's some adjustment made for low income households and scrapping most deductions. Of course then it's not really a flat tax. Also, it applies to businesses and not just individuals and then it gets trickier.

I actually think Milton Friedman's negative tax is a worthy idea. But conservatives won't like giving all of that money to low income households, even though part of the idea of a negative tax is to scrap a lot of the costly welfare and assistance programs.
