Let's face it, balanced reporting is very hard to do, and if you succeed, you end up alienating both the right and the left, and there go your subscribers.
In The Big Sort, Bill Bishop makes the case that moderate politicians are finding it more and more difficult to get elected. He also makes a case that the number of politicians in congress that could be judged as "moderates" (if one can judge that) has diminished substantially over the past 50 years.
When it comes to "news," and I use that term loosely, the majority of people watch the television news that conforms to their preconceived opinions. Those stations "feed" people with what their fans want to hear. IMO, most people have lost their ability or desire to hear an open, honest debate on any issue and be tasked with the chore of thinking and trying to reason. When it comes to the Journal, I see articles that appeal to the far left. I see articles that appeal to the far right. I even see some articles that appear to report facts...wow, facts...so that the reader can draw a conclusion. I think that the Journal is making an attempt to appeal to a wide range of readers, which is pretty much what it needs to do if it wishes to survive the next 10 years.
I don't think that there is any place in NM that is as conservative as some places in TX, especially Midland.
There are a lot of really conservative parts of New Mexico--just as much so as Texas. Pretty much the entire eastern 1/3 of the state is conservative. Additionally, the northwest corner is also very conservative. However, those regions do not have the population that more moderate to liberal parts of the state do.
So, Martinez STILL has not agreed to Denish's debate challenges. Meanwhile, Martinez flip-flopped on taxes AND school vouchers... It looks like Martinez may be shooting herself in the foot. These things, combined with more information coming out about the corruption in the Doña Ana District Attorneys office, may be to Denish's favor if Denish uses them correctly. Thus far, Denish has not used it to her advantage as much as she my be able to. I'm interested to see how this plays out. Now that both of the parties Governors Associations are in the game, that may also shake things up. Just my observations...

Good points--I knew that Hobbs, Clovis and Alamogordo were relatively conservative, but I was thinking of them in comparison to the rest of New Mexico, rather than West Texas.
I don't think Denish will win bernalillo.... its becoming to "conservative" look at this city... we elected a REPUBLICAN as our mayor.
I think Denish could even lose hobbs.
As usual, whoever wins Bernalillo will win the governor's house. County, not city. If I were Martinez, though, I want at least 55% to counterbalance the deficit she will be working against in Santa Fe, Taos, Rio Arriba, and some of the other counties in the north that go 70% to the Democrat, even if it's a ham sandwich.
Denish might lose Lea County, but the plurality, obviously is going to be much smaller than a regular election. I think Richardson even won in Lea County by about 10 percentage points in the 2006 election, so it's not impossible for Democrats to win there.
Well I can agree and disagree. But Bernalillo does make up alot. Martinez will have no problem in Northern New Mexico. She is doing damn great in Taos and Santa Fe.
And 2006, John Dendahl ran, he was no where as popular as "Susana!" haha her name alone is a "brand".

Elected a Republican because two democrats were running... Remember, Berry wasn't elected with a majority vote. He just got more votes than the other two.

True, but bernalillo county as a whole is becoming "republican".
Look at the way our congressional district election history is.... plus Jon Barela giving Heinrich some good comp.

I've always seen Bernalillo County as having a good, healthy mix. Part conservative, part liberal, but very much a moderate area. As such, I think it's hard to pin it down. I wouldn't say it's getting more conservative, in fact i'd say it feels a little bit more liberal than when I was younger. But who knows. One thing for sure, if you want to be governor you have to be popular in Bernalillo County.
