Hispanic = they speak Spanish
Latino = they're from a Latin American country and have a Y chromosome
Latina = they're from a Latin American country and have an X chromosome
Human females have XX chromosomes and human males have XY ( in most cases, there are some genetic anomalies ) which means that, according to your definition, a human female of Latin American origin or descent could only be a Latina but a male could be either a Latino or a Latina.
I recommend that you consider writing for Wikipedia.
Barcelona is a bilingual city and Catalan is spoken there. Check out the wiki article on the subject.
Yes of course, they do, I was referring to the majority. I don´t need the wiki for that I´m spanish. All catalonia has two official languages, as galicia, basque country, balearic islands and valencia.
Wrong. Maybe in the other 3 cities of catalunia, not in Barcelona, and obviously not in Valencia.
What is the ratio of Castillian/Catalan in Barcelona, Valencia and other parts of Catalonia? How about Galicia? I have never been to Valenica, but I have visited Barcelona twice. I am bilingual, but I do not speak spanish.
Latino refers to Latin America. The Latin in Latin America refers to the Romance Languages, which are derived from the Latin language. So French, Spanish and Portuguese speaking people would all qualify as Latinos, if they wanted to identify themselves that way.
And please, stop with the Wikipedia.
Untill yesterday I would have sort of sided with you, but accordingly, accodring to the US Census Bureau, only spanish speaking Latin Americans count as Latino.
This is a funny thread. I have a spanish surname, but I don't speak Spanish. Different people want to be called different things. I would rather be called Hispanic because my heritage is from Spain, not Latin America. So I don't consider myself "latino". This discussion is being held by people who are probably "white". There is no tried and true "label". And I find it funny that all of you are trying to "label" people who are from varied backgrounds, cultures and areas.
Labels ARE funny, or wierd or just plain silly, still they carry weight in alot of parts of the world.
I am born in Sweden, my mother was adopted from South Korea and my dad moved to Sweden from Naples, Italy in the early 70's.
Here in the US I am "Asian" even though neither me or my morther grew up in Asia, speaks an asian language and what ever we know of korean culture comes from reading books and a tourist visit to Korea a few years ago.
Since peopel have asked me if I am Hispanic/Latino/Mexican/Chicano I have got that question alot of times. People look at me in very wierd ways when I say I am Swedish
