I am interviewing now for a job in Farmington at San Juan College. I have read through all the Farmington threads on the forum, including the 37-page behemoth, and I gleaned what I could from it. However, much of that information was posted a decade or more ago. Is Farmington the same now? Better? Worse?
I gather that North and East of downtown is still the best advice for safe areas to live (I have one high schooler still at home). How far north do I need to go? Would Glade Road/Glade Park be a safe area for my wife while I am away at work? I'm also considering Aztec, as I understand the High School is good and they have more trees out there. My son is a motivated student, and I want to ensure he remains challenged in his last 2 years in school before he goes to college.
We have lived rural for the past 15 years (Alaska & the Upper Peninsula of Michigan), and we like the slower pace.
Thanks in advance for all your answers and personal perspectives!
I'm still interested in Farmington, and when I come to town for the interview in a few weeks, I'd like to focus my free time looking at houses in the areas where I will want to live.
I know it's easy to just focus on the NE portion, but that's generally the priciest real estate. I know it's expensive because it's desirable, but I'm hoping there are other areas NE of the airport that are safe, too (and a bit more affordable).
Poncho, thanks for your response. I think I have read all of those. I appreciate all the input from you and others on those threads. But since most of those posts are older, I was hoping to learn how things have changed in 2019, if at all. I'm not dismissing those older posts - I just realize that few cities are static. Have any of the areas of the city improved? Gotten worse?
Is Farmington High School the least attractive of all the schools in the area? Are gangs a problem there or outside the old town parts of the city?
Thanks to all for any updates on the Farmington of today.

We have continuously lived in New Mexico for the past 20+ years and I have come out to the areas prior to that.
Yes, the posts are older, but they are still very valid (there are somethings which don't seem to change much) .
I have driven through the Farmington area 10 to 20 times (I really do not remember). I have never stayed, but there are over 20 decent hotels in the area.
Small side note- you mentioned Aztec. I stayed there a few days two years ago. Cute little town and you are literally on the doorstep to Colorado and the gem that is Durango. I know Aztec dealt with a school shooting, but seems a sleepy town, very into the high school sports and i enjoyed the architecture and cleanliness from what i saw in such a short time.

Thanks! I do have an interest in Aztec. I will look into it closer.
Crime in Farmington itself is reportedly about 50% higher than national average, on violent and property crime. Property crime not as bad outside city limits and probably in better city neighborhoods. The crime rate bounces around but 2017 was the worst in 15 years. Aztec appears only slightly above national averages on crime.
The arts & entertainment options (that I see & hear advertised) are probably improving some.
Most K-12 schools are average at best but there are a few exceptions. Google and check a school ratings site.
Considering relocating to the Farmington area. I checked out Farmington a couple of months ago, not as bad as I had envisioned. I'm leaning toward Alamogordo, warmer weather and safer town (haven't seen yet, plan to in the spring). Anyway, retired couple looking to buy a house in the 200-225k range. I worked in the mental health/social work field, so I understand the underbelly of society. That said, the high crime rate in Farmington is a concern (I've drilled down on those numbers), also wonder about the sense of community in Farmington? I would appreciate any feedback on the Farmington area as a retirement destination, pro and con? Thank you.

I don't know much about Farmington, other than that 200-225k is going to go further in Alamogordo than in Farmington. I had a client sell a home for his deceased father back in August and there was a bidding war on a 1750 square foot older home in Farmington, and his realtor priced it at $275,000. That same home would be much less in Alamogordo.
