Here is an interesting annual event that doesn't get that much publicity outside of the southern NM region. Even though it's held in the spring, before hot weather arrives, it's still a grueling ordeal for those who run or walk the entire marathon distance of 26 miles. It's nothing like running on paved streets even though there is a roughly graded "track" through very rocky terrain.
Come and celebrate the kick-off of hiking season on the Continental Divide Trail at Continental Divide Trail Days, April 15th thru 17th in Silver City! There will be presentations, gear giveaways, music and, of course, hiking!
Here's an event this coming weekend - April 9, 2016 - that I just learned about from an article in the Ruidoso News. Not sure why I haven't known about this before now. Apparently those who are more involved in competitive cycling knew of the event since it's already closed to entrants. But everyone is free to ride the many miles of trails in the area anytime, year around!
