I am not trying to be mean. Please do not move here! We have been overloaded in Santa Fe by people moving here from California, Texas and New York. You are driving up the prices, increasing the population and congesting traffic.
If you are from any other state and considering moving here, please, no. Thank you and good luck on your move!
If it were a dump, wealthy retirees wouldn't be flocking here from NY, CA, etc. Celebrities wouldn't live here, or have second homes here.
But this is the OP's original complaint-- that all these people moving to Santa Fe have ruined it for the people who made Santa Fe the attraction it was and is.
In the same way, I disagree that growth will improve Albuquerque which is what others are saying. And Albuquerque has lots of refugees from Santa Fe, two of my neighbors (and several other friends and acquaintances) in ABQ grew up in Santa Fe but their families have scattered, for them ABQ is the better place to live.
The same applies with regard to crime and the "dump" characterization. Trying to say that the poster must've meant Albuquerque with the "dump" characterization is even more offensive and wrong! But I know that's how you like to believe things to be, despite not knowing anything about Albuquerque. Albuquerque is a big and varied city, it has lots of beautiful areas that are very nice. Albuquerque encompasses all of the variety of what makes a city dynamic, great and unique.
In the entire 14 days you have been active on this board?
I've been to Albuquerque - it's ok, just that, ok. Nice mountain view. Some cool areas of town. Be nice if it morphed into a desert Austin (without the crazy growth).
OP, now that you've posted this I'm sure everybody who planned to move to Santa Fe will go elsewhere.
Shoot, if only I'd posted the same thing in the Arizona forum years ago, or the California forum before that...
I've been coming here for over 10 years, and every section of this site has always had these sort of threads, even the states where I would think no one would want to move to.
It's never been like this year though, with the riots and so many people switching to working from home full time, there's no reason to live in a roach infested box in NYC for your job when you can buy a mansion somewhere beautiful out west for the same money.
As far as the riots, I stayed over at a friend's house during the riots in Chicago and saw a caravan of uhaul trucks pass by after curfew to loot, with the police nowhere to be seen. People were murdered by the "protesters" a few blocks from where I was trying to protect their businesses. Now many of the people who voted the politicians who enabled (and also supported) this to happen in are no longer comfortable living around what they've created, Pandora's box has been opened. I just wonder whether those people realize what they've done, and whether they've learned from their mistakes. Judging by the amount of Biden signs I see around Illinois, someone who has aligned himself with this revolutionary movement, I think not.

A shame when people are too dumb for their own good. Same goes for those who support mass immigration and then complain about housing prices, as I stated earlier.
I do believe these riots and the media defending them has awoken many people though. I've seen a lot of Trump signs out here in NM, maybe equal to the number of Biden signs.

Santa Fe County, New Mexico Population 2020
Santa Fe County, New Mexico's estimated population is 150,934 with a growth rate of 0.29% in the past year according to the most recent United States census data. Santa Fe County, New Mexico is the 3rd largest county in New Mexico.
6,000 in growth over the past 10 years is a manageable, reasonable rate of growth. For a comparison, Hays County Texas grew from 157,103 in 2010 to 230,191 last year. That's a gain of 73,000 in a 10 year period.

I've been to Austin, it's no Albuquerque. No mountains, no snow. What's up with that? I can't take Austin's unbearably hot and humid summers and insects, not to mention traffic... and it's in Texas. That's the real deal-breaker.

Albuquerque is full of people who grew up in Santa Fe. Many come to go to UNM or to work for a company and never go back (to live).
Santa Fe is great and has a lot of things that Albuquerque doesn't, and it really is the best place for many people, but it certainly isn't the 'be all, end all' of central/northern NM living.

I was stationed in Austin once. About 5 years before I was stationed in NM. I liked it then. Though, as you say, it's hot and humid. Even so, I thought then that I wouldn't mind living there permanently sometime after I was through with the Air Force.
But in recent years I'd rather be almost any place other than there. They've gotten screwy, the traffic has gotten worse, cost of living has gone way up, etc. I could deal with Texas. Some parts of it. But Austin is no longer one of those parts.
