So, you don't care what what people from other states think, but you think New Mexico might benefit from tourism?
1. No I did not say that. What part of "I really could care less what "responses from focus group members in Chicago, Houston and Los Angeles" had to say..." do you really not understand. Were you part of this focus group? What questions were asked? Just what background do these people have? What's your true intentions? Where is the documentation for the tax payer funded project taken by the State Tourism Secretary?
2. Correct, I think New Mexico might benefit from tourism.

wouldn't be a true NM sign without a few bulletholes. plus, the state would go broke if they went around replacing signs every time someone used them for target practice.
i think the main reason they changed the name of highway 666 to 491 had far more to do with the state getting fed up with constantly having to replace the stolen 666 signs than anything else.
Maybe New Mexico should set up a booth near Rt 491 with a sign that said :FORMERLY RT 666 BUY YOUR OFFICIAL ROAD SIGNS HERE"
There's some wisdom in the humor, GregW....
In my summer home area in Michigan there's a highway called M-22 that follows the lakeshore and beaches on the lee side (where the waves are big) of Lake Michigan. A couple windsurfing fanatics started a company based on this highway and are doing very, very well. Car stickers, a clothing line, wine, special coffee, you name it...they brand it and sell it.
NM made a mistake by "re-branding" 666...they should have capitalized on it. M-22
I think thats just a little bit more than just a few bullet holes at this stage. I have heard about the contract we are in and yes they probably would go broke because they pay way more than they are worth, no wonder the State is so jacked up.

One thing that does hinder more tourism dollars in New Mexico is few non stop flights to Eastern cities. Not even a nonstop to JFK/LGA or Newark. New Yorkers are a big draw for tourism with money to spend. Everyone knows they move quite a bit faster than most so many couldn't be bothered with a layover in Denver, PHX, or DFW enroute to ABQ or ELP. Though New Mexico's relative isolation I find could be both a curse and a blessing depending how one looks at it. The fact that the state has lots if authentic character and but lacks the crowds of resort towns or full trailhead parking lots in Colorado is a nice draw for me.
