Questions on New Orleans Industry (Baton Rouge, Laplace: school, rail, oil)

I'm making a city plan of New Orleans (I'm teaching myself - this is just for fun) and need to know about shipping and the ports. Do most ships come through Industrial Canal, drop their cargo off, which then gets shipped all over the country? Whats the system that they have?

No, 99% of the ships come up the Mississippi river and drop there cargo in many ways. Here are a few I know of:
Large tankers drop there oil at the mouth of the river, and it's piped to the refinry's
Smaller tankers go up the river to the refinry they un load at.
Large cargo ships come up the river and unload latch barges, which a tug pushes up the river to it's destination(A large tug pushing 36 latch barges up the river is a hell of a site).
Some cargo ships are full of containers that are dropped at the port of new orleans, they are shipped out by rail and truck.
And every other way imaginable, I work on the river(not on the river, but at a refinry on the river), and it still amazes me all the ships passing by maybe.
It was mighty scary, when the stock meltdown, and 90% of the boat traffic stopped along with all the 18 wheeler traffic from the ports.
Glad to see it back halfway normal.

Baton Rouge also has a port and some ships go upriver to it.

Technically, there is a Port of New Orleans, and a Port Of South Louisiana. POSL is centered at Laplace apparently. I work for a large company on the river at Reserve, LA (Port Of South Louisiana). We load Panamax-sized vessels with grain. The grain is brought down the river from the Midwest on barges, unloaded, then loaded on ships.

Twizzler1 comes here and makes an initial post (his post count is 1) and gives no information about himself at all. He claims to be doing this for fun, and he probably is, but how do we know?

What he's asking for, and getting, is information about shipping traffic flow and port facilities which could be useful for persons whose intent is not so benign.

We don't need to be paranoid about security these days, but it doesn't hurt to be alert either.
