Ok, how is NOLA developing and how can it compete with other major cities for new industries?

It was the fastest growing city in the country last year, has gained a reputation as a start-up haven, and has attracted a growing share of the film industry.

I thought you had property down here? When is the last time you came to visit? I have felt a huge difference in the last 2 years or so.

July was my last visit but it seems that retailers are afraid to come to New Orleans

They must not be too afraid because a Costco's, Winn-Dixie, Wal-Mart, Office Depot, etc. are being built or are planned on being built. Some other new stores have opened in the past year like Fresh Market and some smaller stores. There have been some other talk on some new stores too like at the old Robert's on Broad, in New Orleans East, and other places. Then two outlet malls are planned to be opened. Just read through nola.com or something.

You're not paying close enough attention. Just because they're not looking at the French Quarter/CBD doesn't mean they're ignoring the area. Big box retail doesn't belong in our "hip" areas like, for example, the Marigny, but they're growing like wildfire out here in the suburbs (as it should be). It's not going to kill anyone to make a 5-10 mile trip to Target. We shouldn't be hoping for Downtown to be cookie cutter anywhere USA.

I came to NOLA because its not boring old strip mall USA. If I have to drive to Metarie or Chalmette to go to Walmart then big flipping deal. I love all the mom and pop stores around here, it gives the city a whole lot more character.

When big box retailers come to the CBD then that's a good sign that the economy and demographics can sustain a store like that. If there was a homegrown, Louisiana-based big box grocer then I'm all for it, but there isn't. A Target would be really great.

I would love for New Orleans to improve its housing stock, renovate the Treme area and speculate what East NO can become again. I think that New Orleans should annex Metry. Street repair and have deputy mayor who crisscross the country looking for industries to move here. You just cannot live on culture alone,

??Why is Houston so rich and New Orleans poor??? How could this happen?????

It's METAIRIE and its citizens have ZERO interest in being annexed. A city cannot unilaterally decide to annex another city.
