New Orleans Aviation Board backs the Mayor's $826 million airport renovation plan. I can understand why some of this is needed, but it seems pretty wasteful after hundreds of millions were just spent on renovations before the Super Bowl, especially b/c it appears that a lot of the construction will be new and in a different area.

What does everyone think?

I think this is needed. Even though the airport is greatly improved, it definitely can get A LOT better than it is. Yes, I was impressed by the airport renovations, but does that mean we sit on our laurels and ignore the trashy areas of the airport? No. And that's why this is needed, even with the recent renovation.

Quite honestly, the airport is pathetic for a city with so many visitors and what is now becoming one of the healthiest economies in the United States. The fact that TACA Airlines used to actually be headquartered in New Orleans and there were multiple routes to Latin America shows that we can, one day, get that exchange back. The airport definitely shouldn't be called "The Gateway to the Americas" if there is in fact one flight in Canada and intermittent service between here and Mexico.

The airport needs whatever investment it can receive.

Not wasteful at all, having been to many other airports outside of Louisiana now, I can tell you this will be nothing but good for MSY. It badly needed a real upgrade. DFW and many others have separated terminals. I'm assuming there will be shuttle service or some other type of transpiration to get you in between the two as needed.

There's actually an existing underground tunnel underneath the East/West runway that could be used to connect the 2 terminals. See:http://blog.nola.com/graphics/2009/05/TUNNEL051109.jpg

This is very wasteful. Some of this money would be better used to fix the pot holes in the streets.

It would probably cost this much to actually repave the roads and not just patch them up.

My understanding is that no tax dollars at all will go to the airport project. It will be completely paid for by the airport. So it isn't like the money will be used for the airport instead of other infrastructure improvements.

The money in the airport's coffers can not be used for general city needs.
