What would you say is the most annoying misperception about New Orleans from outsiders??? For me, its a top-3 list:

1) The entire city is Bourbon Street
2) Natives pronounce the name of the city as "Nawlins"
3) New Orleans is constantly inundated with hurricanes...

Give me whatcha got! Ciao

I think that's more along the lines of older movies. Most people know they sound more like New Yorkers.

You would be surprised how many people expect New Orleanians to sound like true Southerners. People tell me all the time how I can't be from here bc I don't sound Southern.

When I was in my early teens, a girl actually asked me if I used an airboat to get around. I didn't catch any hint of irony in her voice.

I've moved around quite a bit. To throw out a wide stereotype blanket (I realize not all are like this) American's don't get out much anymore. My personal belief is that it helps them reject the lure of trying new places/things (they feel safer staying in the same neighborhood where everything is known/reliable and this is way to get over those feelings of fear with rationalization). I've found positive and negative in each place I've lived, neither to the degree that you hear about. 90% of everywhere is the same for most of us, you find a place for shelter and try to get along with those around you, find a way to get income to buy food and clothes, and find things to do with any free time (I get this all the time living in Hawaii - "Which beach are you at today? Ummm, none I'm at work lol I still have to do the "life" things").

I follow a lot of doomer/prepper forums, and sometimes you can get overwhelmed as everyone is talking about the Mad Max world, but someone posted something that puts in perspective. "Ecuador is one of the poorest countries in South America, and you can still buy a beer, so it can't be all bad" - There is positive in every location, in my opinion. It's up to you to find it.
