What's up yall I'm an R&b/jazz musician originally from Texarkana but currently residing in Austin. I hate central Texas and after a recent visit have fallen completely in love with New Orleans and decided I'd be interested in living there. I have a pretty comfy income so looking for a job and housing are pretty much a non issue. Most of my concerns are related to my social life.

How are Texans treated in New Orleans? I have a lot of friends in Houston tx and they tell me some Louisianans really don't like us for some reason. I just don't want to make the move and end up being treated like an outcast. I don't hold up the stereotype of some obnoxious cowboy. I am outspoken but consider myself to be quite worldly and very laid back. I also hate the Cowboys and love that Saints spirit,,though I'm a Texans fan myself!

Any people here with some experience in what I'm dealing wit? Any neighborhoods or establishments where Texans are known to frequent? Ive been to Bourbon Street and thats not my scene at all. I have my own identity but im interested in becoming a "local". What are some good Tex Mex restaurants or taquerias in the area. Does New Orleans have much of a food truck scene? Good burgers and barbecue? Asian?

Also is this a good city for a young single man? Is there a community of young educated blacks to be found?

This is the original thread: //www.city-data.com/forum/louis...l#post33244362

Mod must've of made a mistake?

Anyway this was my post:
Texans are treated like everyone else that comes to New Orleans. It's known as one of the friendliest cities in the US for a reason. We just hate the Cowgirls. I have no idea why your friend would tell you that, I lived in Houston and never had a problem.

There are neighborhoods that are filled with transplants, but not just Texans. There is a growing Latino population in the area so there will be more of that. Food trucks have caught on, yet I believe it's still quite a bit behind Houston. There's plenty of authentic Asian dining options in the metro, as well as other authentic cuisines.

I actually put my question in the Louisiana section on accident and asked for it to be moved here. I wish I had more responses though.

One thing I can tell you not to worry about is anything regarding you being Texan. Has no bearing in New Orleans.

You can search the forum for information on restaurants and professional scene.

BTW, great place for young single people.

Texans are treated like anyone else for the most part. The most outstanding reactions will come from people reacting to your dialect and deducing that you're not from the area. Its not a scrutinizing reaction though and is mainly comes from black people. I've dealt with it a bit myself from random cashiers and such.

Your friends in Houston may be drawing from personal experience, but the thought that N.O. hates is simply incorrect. In fact, a lot of people I know here who experienced Katrina consider Houston a second home due to evacuations.

Interested in becoming a local? Being a Jazz Musician is a plus. Not being a Cowboys fan is a plus

This is a GREAT city to be young, single, and free of obligations. You can easily find a 1 bedroom apartment in the CBD, Uptown, or Mid-City for a relatively affordable rate.

Candidly speaking, the young educated black population is a bit lacking. Especially in comparison to Austin. Historically, New Orleans suffered from "brain drain" where the brightest would leave for better opportunities. Fortunately this is changing. More and more intellectuals are moving here to match the numbers of creatives we've always had. I know because I am apart of this change, having started my company in elsewhere and recently moved it here.

Any other questions, feel free to ask your East Texas compatriot

Yep. We have Blue Bell. I was never impressed with the Tex-Mex in Houston, but we have a few good BBQ joints and a lot of Mexican/Central American food.

Don't worry about food. We have plenty.
