I am considering moving to New Orleans next year, because I want to live in a warm climate in a picturesque city that is on a major body of water. It must also have affordable housing as I am on a fixed income of social security of about $1,100 a month. My boyfriend maybe moving with me and will have to find work once we get there. I have done some research and the city offers sufficient health services for my transition, hormone replacement therapy, and there is a local LGBT center. I have also seen that there are several bars and night clubs that advertise themselves as transgender friendly. I am told that I am very passable, but I don't believe that anyone is totally passable under strict scrutiny, but I have also been told that I am very pretty. I am a mature trans* woman of color and I am near the completion of my transition I only wish to live a quiet normal life. I know that the south in general is not a good region for transgender people, but I want to be out of the cold north and can't afford California. Is New Orleans a safe and friendly environment for a transsexual woman of color? I appreciate any help you can give. Thanks!

New Orleans has always been a safe haven for minorities in the South in all aspects--LGBT people, Jews, people of color, etc. I'm gay, and was in college there last year--LOVED IT! Didn't encounter any homophobia/biphobia and also didn't pick up on any transphobia there. I know a few transmen down there and they haven't had any issues besides the typical coming-out family thing. I saw many transgender people downtown, in Bourbon particularly, as well. There's a big LGBT nightlife scene out there. There are some anti-LGBT people there; it's the South, and there's old Repubican evangelicals and stuff, and sometimes they come with those "find Jesus" signs into Bourbon, but nobody really pays attention to them.

Thanks Hawaii4evr that was very helpful. I had suspected that things are as you described them, but it never hurts to get a first hand account. Thanks again!

My pleasure! Enjoy the Big Easy! It is one of the best cities in the country, IMO.

Put it this way, I live next to 3 transgender people (in different houses) and they have all said New Orleans has treated them very well. It's extremely LGBT friendly. New Orleans is really like a whole other place as far as acceptance. People just don't care about that stuff here. I think everybody needs to see New Orleans at least once, it really is an amazing city and the people are fantastic.

Other than San Francisco, I feel New Orleans is the most LGBT friendly city I have ever visited.

Also, there is an entire section of the French Quarter that is almost exclusively made up of LGBT bars, restaurants, and other establishments.

Mean from the heart, thanks for your input. This is really making me a lot more comfortable and confident about my choice and decision to move to New Orleans. I have been looking forward to moving for a long time, but couldn't decide where to go. I did visit the city in 2009 and loved it, but that was shortly before my transition, so I didn't know how I would be received as my real self. Now I feel I will be okay.

rawrockills thanks! I didn't know that the French Quarter had that. What do you think are some good neighborhoods for me? I would be interested in a 1 bedroom and really would like some outdoor space too. It would have to be cheap but still safe. Thanks again!

I don't think it's the whole Quarter. (Not sure, I usually turn around, I just don't wanna see half dressed me know what I'm sayin?) But I know once you go far down Bourbon it's very LGBT friendly. One of the most accepting cities in the country, the most in the south.

Any other things you want in a neighborhood?
