Hello everyone.

I'm considering an opportunity to move from England to work in New Orleans at the port.

It has been recommended that I consider River Ridge as a place to live, is this a nice area and suited for a family with two boys aged 7 and 10?

What other areas should be considered?

It concerns me about the crime statistics, is crime an accepted way of life wherever you live in the New Orleans area or is it a case of keep your nose clean and you'll be ok?

Is Lake Pontchartrain used for fun activities such as fishing and watersports?

Is the city centre generally safe for family strolling, shopping, dining etc?

Would a combined income of say $100-$110k sustain a reasonable lifestyle taking into account a nice house in River Ridge for example and kids attending a private school?

Do any of you have children attending John Curtis Christian School? Does it generally come recommended?

What is the healthcare like, denstists, doctors, hospitals?

Look forward to any help and guidance that you may offer.

Many thanks.

$100k should work out fine I'd venture.
The Lake is used by some for fishing, and sailing...not so much swimming (anymore).
Keep your nose clean and don't wonder off alone and you will be ok. I've lived here for a while and not a a problem (in the city)...
The Quarter and the CBD (nola.com says now it's the American Sector again) are generally ok especially during daylight. At night if you go to the Quarter stay on well lit streets and just be smart. Don't wonder alone in a dim lit street and walk on the side of the parked cars that could get you mugged (as it would in many places).

I'm not sure about the school. Most schools I'm familar with are in the city itself.

I highly recommend Audubon Dental Group on Magazine Street. In an emergency, East Jefferson I'd venture might be the place to go...

John Curtis does not have the academic reputation opf schools like St. Martin's, Metairie Park Country Day, McGhee's, etc.

River Ridge is a safe family area.

Do you have the visa issues worked out? You would need an H1B visa and be sponsored by the company. If your wife is to work, she needs the same visa type.

My grandkids love the Aquarium, French Quarter, Audubon Park, Storyland in City Park, and the many smaller parks around town. It's fun to take the ferry across the river and back - and it's free. Or you can walk over to Mardi Gras World before coming back. Ride the street car along St. Charles.
