Maybe they didn't like you. I am starting to think a lot of these management companies are playing "favorites". Graft, scams, nepotism, and corruption... hey, NYC has ALWAYS been that way. Especially when it comes to affordable housing. Why would this program be any different?

Did you receive an actual letter? If so, there must be instructions on how to appeal.

The advice you were given by a previous poster is good. Google Marketing Guidelines HDC and download the PDF. Read the whole thing.

It's possible it's just a mistake. Suppose they mixed you up with someone else? You need to get to the bottom of this.

I read the hpd guideline and read the asset limit section like a million times! I'm no where near the asset limit! I've proven that with asset verification forms. I'm just hoping it's an oversight and someone just hastily rejected me. For goodness sakes, I'm praying they mixed me up with someone else.

Then state that in an appeal letter. Keep it brief and to the point with all of the facts. Copy and paste anything from the marketing handbook that proves your case . It could've easily been a mistake, don't forget that these people deal with hundreds of files at a time.. Good luck !

Interesting...

I just find it so odd on how fast a one-bedroom opened up in the affordable housing building I'm qualified for. Saturday I get an email stating there are only Studios available. I turn down the Studio, asked to be put on the wait-list. Monday, a one-bedroom "freed" up and they sent my application off to the city with no questions asked.

I heard wait-lists can be brutal! Some people wait years upon years, and I barely waited 48 hours. I couldn't have possibly be the only waiting for a one-bedroom given a log number of 37XXX (no preference)
If I was, well I'll be damned!

I'm not complaining at all, it just doesn't add up! I'm a gay black/hispanic male and my interviewer was a middle aged Asian woman. Maybe she saw my pride wristband and was a supporter? lol. Who knows!

All I know is the process was much smoother with Yuco Management than it was with whoever was managing West 42nd Street. It was clear I wasn't like there from the start! But I won't get into that.

I'm hoping the original poster isn't victim to this, that's the wrong side to be on.
Who is managing your file OP? Do you remember?

Hi. Managing company is Breaking Ground. They seem nice. I think they are understaffed but the guy who handled my file usually gets back to me as soon as he can. I got rejected from HPD and I've never seen them before. Sometimes I wonder if the employee gets more "props" for rejecting files because he/she found supposedly "issues". I assume it doesn't look good to management if they got 1000 files and all gets approved.

But I do feel like I got discriminated due to having a little savings. I was just being honest to show what I had in the bank. I even read on this forum that people pull their money out so they don't have to let them know. I definitely wouldn't do that!

You have to hand in six months' worth of savings account statements and six months of checking. So I don't know how you'd "pull money out" and have it not show up on old statements.

Some people here have said they contacted HPD directly, but I don't know how that's done.

I will definitely try to contact HPD to get more information. Thank you everyone! Let this appeal journey begin!

Does anyone know if HPD changed their guidelines to state that Assets can not exceed household income? I thought on the handbook it states it can not exceed max income limit for your bracket?

So I contacted the management company and they informed me that initially I was rejected for over assets and have overturn the decision after my appeal. Afterwards my file was submitted to HPD for approval. Hpd had some questions and management company reviewed my file again. This time they reversed the decision and rejected me for the same reason! I'm not sure what's going on as they never go into details on their calculations. I just hope someone at HPD will have someone who is knowledgeable and reverse the decision. At this point, my hopes are not high. Need all the help and/or prayers now.
