I actually have three cases on the portal. One for public housing, and two for section 8. One of the section 8 applications is for the RAD housing, which was described to me as a privately owned units in a well maintained/updated building that has the same payment standards as section 8 and depending on funding, you may be eligible for a section 8 voucher after living there for some time. Is that the kind of section 8 application you have, too? My other section 8 case is the Bronx DA referral for the voucher.

My public housing application is Preliminary
My section 8 RAD application is Application Received
My section 8 referral from the DA is Invited-Briefing

Yes. They were taking me to court to get me removed from the home. Thankfully, it didn’t happen. I am VDV with NYCHA due to my mental health provider documenting the abuses.

I have the RAD section 8. Both in the same status as yours.

Also, I meant to say I have RAD section 8, but it’s in the same status as your section 8 RAD - application received.

NYCHA public housing- Preliminary Waitlist

Section 8 RAD- Application Received

My boroughs are Manhattan & Bronx.

It feels like time is moving so slowly!

Did you choose the same boroughs as well?

I just remembered you’re in NYCHA already. Haha. May I ask how long it took for you to be interviewed? I keep checking the portal everyday and nothing yet. It’s only been a month since I’ve been approved for N1 but the situation I’m in is makes it feel like forever.

Hey Rose, any updates on an interview?

I still see zero changes to my public housing and my RAD, but my section 8 referral is moving forward. It’s a little mind boggling to me because I saw a headline on Pix11 about how 1,000s were vacant this past December.

I really hope y'all get something good soon. This all happened because the city & NY government wanted to help out the people who came from Ukraine and were transported to NY. Not to be rude, but they don't belong here and yet the state and city is giving all of NY resources to them instead of helping people who need it.

ALL of these apartment vacancies are because there's not enough workers to fix up apartments now. Eric Adams told the city for all job vacancies to hold off on hiring/ keep it to a minimum because NYC funds are low from spending all the money on the Ukrainians and that they're asking the government to allocate more money to NY because basically, they messed up. In reality I feel like they should've been moved upstate.

It's sad that people in NYC must suffer like this. There are so many people in shelters, or other horrible situations and they can't even get an apartment because NY is spending all their money on hotels for outsiders and not on the residents who already live here or tackling the fact that the workforce is depleting. NYC already has so much stuff that needs to be improved with funding.

(Sorry for the rant) I just moved out of NYCHA 2.5 weeks ago and it just infuriates me that it got this bad. I didn't even know availabilities in NYCHA was that high until I say your comment (Weakbeanwater).

Hello,

I haven’t seen any other changes. Oddly enough, my W3 priority disappeared and I had to update my income again to get it back. I hope this didn’t set me back. I wish NYCHA gave us some kind of number so we’d know our place on the list or something. Oh! How did the interview for section 8 go?

I was just reading an article about how Eric Adams was investing in the “working peoples agenda.” So I am hoping that there’s more workers now. I’d like to think NYCHA workers are apart of that budget. I don’t have an issue with help for foreign folks, especially after hearing & seeing all that has been happening to ukraines. The problem is the mayor. There would be more than enough funds to cover both if he didn’t invest so much of it into funding the police.

It definitely is infuriating that there’s clearly so many vacant apartments but not enough workers. I think they probably prioritize current residents rather than empty apartments.

I keep checking my NYCHA status every day. NYCHA keeps sending me mail and the abuser has opened my mail and used that to further the abuse. I reached out to NYCHA and they says there’s no way to not have paper letters and that I should get a PO Box.

It’s very exhausting. I was reading that NYCHA has 6k vacant apartments. Upon checking the amount of certified N1 on their public list, that would be enough to house all them and then more! https://www.nyc.gov/assets/nycha/dow...plications.pdf

They hire lots of folks for caretaker J but I think that’s because it’s a minimum wage position. Unlike having to pay folks to fix up the apartments. Overall, I’m just hoping and praying that they find me an apartment soon. I’m losing my mind in my current environment and my therapist is doing all she can to help.

Oh! Congrats on moving out. Did you move to another affordable housing program?

Sorry for the rant! It just ticks me off so bad!

As someone who’s looking at this from the outside (not a politician or analyst with knowledge of who and how funding is allocated between various departments or agencies), I can’t wrap my head around the idea - or at least perception of- not prioritizing funding for housing for all New Yorkers over (most) other things.

I had never been homeless before in my life but literally ran away with my children to keep them safe. We stayed in an emergency shelter, which is meant to only be a 3 month stay, with a max of 6 months. We were there 11 months. Nearly a whole year. I agreed to be streamlined to a DHS shelter around the 5 month mark and we waited around for a space to open up for our family size. It made NO SENSE to me that we had been waiting for months for a space that never became available, but spaces were being made within DHS for migrant/refugee families. Not being streamlined meant I was taking up an emergency placement that could have enabled another parent and their two children to escape a dangerous situation…

I overheard a housing specialist ranting about the lack of space for local homeless families because of the surge last year, and because I used to volunteer with HR agencies, I also heard many who live at the shelter nearby feel entitled to pick through and dump clean, new clothing donations (meant for the homeless and people who use drugs) when they aren’t name brand. 90% of everything my son and I own was donated store brand clothes we found at the shelter or received from my children’s pediatrician… theres 0 shame in that. As someone who was traumatized, I understand the process people can go through after escaping an abuser or dangerous and traumatic situation. Finally having the space to safely come out of fight/flight mode can debilitate you and you may struggle to take care of yourself and your space (like the mess of the rooms they showed on the news) but the entitlement is hard for me to empathize with and honestly made the prospect of not getting a space sting even worse. But I am grateful… Being a US Citizen means I qualify for NYCHA or Section 8, even if no one was helping me expedite that at the time.

I really recommend you try to get in touch with a Crime Victim Advocate if you don’t mind moving out of NYCHA. The interview was simple, I just had to send in documents and my crime victim advocate followed up with NYCHA every two weeks or so. I got the voucher! Through email first actually and then later on it showed up on the portal. So the timeline with the referral was less than 3 months from Application Received on 11/22 to Voucher Holder Search 2/8. I have heard absolutely nothing about public housing and RAD housing, no updates at all…

I agree. Housing should be a priority. I’ve been in shelters my entire adolescence. From age 10 till 17. In nyc: from age 11 to 17. My mother who is my current abuser, just made the process even more horrific. The abuse didn’t end in shelters, unfortunately. I helped her move into our current NYCHA apartment by completing the applications, telling her about priority and always staying up-to-date. Within 6 months of having N1 priority we moved out.

Space has always been made for migrant/fleeing families. Often times they don’t get the same basic necessities compared to being a US citizen. I’ve seen many migrant women face a lot of struggles with access to welfare and just basic advocacy rights compared to those of us who were citizens. I’ve seen a lot of them move out of the shelter into a homes filled with others and be mistreated/abused. The State definitely needs to better and fund housing, establish a rent cap and also regulate more apartments, increase minimum wage, etc. there’s many, many vacant apartments here but are only reserved for those that can afford them. The fact that they are empty means that the current tenants are paying so much money that landlords can afford to leave them vacant.

I think being upset at victims is a waste of time because the problem is the system.

Thank you. I am not too sure about the crime victim advocate. I sent an email to my local precinct so I’ll see what the say. I plan to follow-up with a call later.

I am just going to keep my head up and pray that I hear something soon.
