Although at least the Jets kept their corporate offices here!

While no one cares about Soccer, you forgot the "New York Redbull", who play just outside of Newark.

Once upon a time, we actually did have a New York soccer team. They were called the New York Cosmos and they played on Randall's Island. Then they got all fancy on us, moved across the Hudson, and all of a sudden they were just the Cosmos. (New Jersey has no marketing value--or nothing that compares with NYC, anyway--and they weren't playing in the city any more so they stopped identifying themselves with New York. As you can see, the Jets and Giants have learned a literally valuable lesson from this, and that's why they haven't changed their corporate names).

As to the title for this thread, as has been suggested before, that's just nonsense. The Yankees and the Mets are both New York teams, simply because they play their home games here. Period. Next case...

Actually, the franchise was born in Baltimore, MD.

Before they became the New York Yankees they were the New York Highlanders, and before that they were the Baltimore Orioles of the National League.

The current Baltimore Orioles were the St. Louis Browns who moved east in 1954.

Default rip out that diamond

The right thing to do would be to shut down the whole team. Sends the boys back home. Jeter can go home to Michigan, and Pettite can go back to Texas. We don't need these mercenaries to represent us. There is not a New York guy on the team.

The larger issue-the issue that is bigger than the Yankees- is that sports has been hijacked and turned into a TV show in the last 60 years. Sports is not show business or entertainment. The primary purpose and greatest benefit is from the athletic challenge and camaraderie from PLAYING the sports. Baseball is not really played all that much around here.

This is why the baseball diamond at Yankee stadium should be ripped out and replaced with handball courts. This way the greatest local talent can have a huge local audience to play our local game. This will benefit the locals and create a omnipresent culture of sport that will overpower the thug/drug/loser culture sold on MTV and BET. If people want to watch a TV show there are great reruns of Seinfeld on TV. We do not need Yankee TV and the people will forget this boring TV sport very fast.

I can go along with you on that one. But let's be honest, shall we? The idea of restricting a roster to people who were born in the city they're going to play for isn't really feasible.

What would be a more acceptable alternative is if people who played for a team in a given city actually moved to that city. I'm inspired to make this comment because I grew up in a household that was loyal to the Brooklyn Dodgers. Not too many native-born Brooklynites on the squad...but most of them relocated here. That's something you rarely see these days.

You have a point. New Yorkers don't play baseball. In fact, NYC has a basketball culture, yet the Knicks are horrible.

At the end of the day, it's entertainment.

This is a real New York sport played by New Yorkers.
Give it a rest! This isn't the World Cup. Even college teams aren't solely with players from their state. This is just a ridiculous thread.
