For those of us who don't have, perhaps, a Bachelors or whatever...are these the only jobs left here?
I'm alright at sales jobs and so-so at telemarketing..but the only places that seem to want to hire me...and many of my friends..are sales and telemarketing places...you can apply to 100 places..and those are the only ones who call back.
I have a LOT of respect for people who do sales and telemarketing. It takes an aggressive, confident, and motivated attitude..but I can't say it's always be for me. Maybe it's an art and something one can improve on...or maybe you're just born with it.
Most of the people that I know that didn't go to college and are making good $$$$ are sales/telemarketing people..no lie. But everyone has this idea that NYC is full of jobs..all I keep running into are sales/telemarketing jobs. Am I the only one who tries to steer clear of those?

Pretty much. I went to school and worked really hard and invested in education and I make a good salary. I would be sad to know any person who a HS diploma could have the same level job I have.
There are very few telemarketing jobs in Manhattan. All of the call centers are in Jersey because the real estate is cheaper.
Retail is obviously big in New York. If you get a job at a high-end place that pays commission you can earn a lot. Also, high-end restaurants and bars are very lucrative. I had a roommate who made close to six-figures working lunches at a steakhouse on Wall Street.
If you want to make good money without a degree you have to cater the rich. That requires a certain level of poise, polish and presentation. Not everyone can do it.
And tolerance...they want to virtually own you for a 20% tip...and bending over backwards just isn't enough...you have to do a full inverted 360 degree twist.

Exactly.
To the OP- why do you think you should make as much money as those of us that invested years of our lives and in some cases a lot of money into education when you did not?

You probably have a lot of student loans to pay back as well, huh?
