City murder rate among blacks skyrocketed 31 percent in 2010

Quote:
At the same time, murders of whites decreased 27 percent last year.

Although blacks make up 25 percent of the city’s population, they were 67 percent of the murder victims last year and over 60 percent of murder suspects were black, according to the NYPD.

What is going on!! So I guess it is much safer for a White person to move to the city than a Black person? And all these Whites moving to Black neighborhoods seem to do much better staying alive than Blacks. I guess they have 'the street smarts'.

This correlates with there being fewer cops than before. Similarly, rape has gone up 34% in this city. Criminals will become more bold when they know they can get away with more things. What has the major offered besides lip service about "helping the community" and that other trite. How about allocating funds to increase safety instead of giving it to the bankers?

More than 75% of those who were murdered had run ins with the law themselves. It has more to do with getting involved directly with criminal elements that makes it more likely to be killed by them.

Allen this does not correlate with fewer cops being on the streets, and we already have discussed that we don't know whether actual rapes have gone up 34%, just reported rapes.

I posted this article yesterday in the crime thread and it should be moved there.

AllenDulless: The decline in the number of cops has been going on for over a decade..and what has been the result? Crime has dropped substantially over the last decade as well...so if anything, the decline in the number of cops has correlated with the decline in the crime rate (especially murder). And we have already talked about the increase of reported rapes does not correlated with an increase in actual rapes..the two do not necessarily go hand in hand as women have a variety of reasons to report/not report rapes. This is all discussed in the crime thread though.

I get that you are intent on bashing the Mayor, but you are wrong in your basic assumptions/deductions and if you are planning on bashing the Mayor, crime is not his weak point.

Weak strawman. A decade ago we weren't in the worst recession since the 1930s. You still haven't provided any proof why rape statistics are not reliable because of some alleged "fluctuation" in the ones that get reported.

The death rate of blacks skyrockets 31%, reported rapes also skyrocket 34%. It doesn't take a genius to figure out the similarities of what is happening. Just like in Candem, NJ when they cut the police force in half and murders, rapes and assaults have shot up along with it. Who is responsible? Whenever an statistic shows that some parameter is improving, Bloomberg is the loudest to take credit for it, when those statistics show the city is getting worse we get excuses and feigned ignorance from officials.

The other thing that is shocking is how much of those murders involve youths, who can't probably read beyond the 5th grade level, using guns to shoot one another. My question again is, how come its so easy for them to get guns and not responsible citizens? Get those guns away from criminals, Bloomberg. They are pulling the triggers.

Are you aware that in the current stats, over 80% of rape victims know their attackers? Do you know how many rape victims (who reported the crime) in the past knew their attackers? I don't have the number but suspect it was much much lower. this could easily be a reason why the reported number of rapes is up (if it really is up; I believe the stats people are reporting right now are only from 2 months--which imo is not long enough to have a pattern established).

If education efforts have paid off, women who are raped by family members and acquaintances will now report the crime whereas in the past the rapes may have gone unreported.

I really wish people would stop manipulating numbers to make news.

Your assumptions are meaningless unless you back them up with something more substantive than a "hunch".

Secondly, the rapes are still occurring. It does not matter if it involves a father, brother, uncle, friend, co-worker, or person you say hello to on the streets. So do not try to downplay what is occurring, twisting the indisputable facts with your out-of-thin-air arguments. Women should be more aware that they can take precautions about people they know, as much as they do about the random criminal who looks to sexually assault anyone knowing them or not.

Also how many those those who were murdered knew their killer? Either they were homies for a long time but now were in rival gangs, or a feud among friends about drugs. Does that make the situation any less worse?

Allen this argument is not a straw man, it is reality. It requires, however, you to look past your agenda of bashing the Mayor/NYC, and analyze your own statements and see they are blatantly wrong.

Over the past decade crime rates have dropped significantly as have the number of cops. The ONLY valid deductions/conclusions is that police have become more effective/community members more active, decreasing the need for so many cops OR NYC overall has simply become safer. To say that over the last decade with a significant decrease in crime, less cops has equaled more crime is just wrong, and so obviously wrong it makes it clear you just have an agenda against the Mayor/fear mongering.

Furthermore, we have already discussed the rape issue, but again, you are incapable of looking past the headlines, using your brain, and simply looking for any reason to bash the Mayor. We get it.

Henna I don't think Allen is capable of thinking past the headlines to come to real conclusions...he just blindly follows the hype.

It's not about "using your brain" as you're trying to say, because in actually that means following your ingrained dogma. People have to use critical thinking by look at facts. The problem with your argument is that you put too much emphasis on what you perceive (the key word here) to be occurring.
We have statistics for a reason, to provide us a measure of the state of the city. What's more, you seem to disregard certain statistics compared to others. Nobody is saying we are getting perfect statistics, but simply that they are data citizens of this city should take note of. It is apparent we are regressing to the days when more cops were needed. No matter what Bloomberg or other politicians with an agenda tell you, New York is not a utopia that gets better with time. Just like any other thing on earth, there are highs and lows on things. And sometimes things just decay down and never come back up. Detroit is an example of this. Do you want NYC to slowly become another Detroit? Or should this be the time to put more focus on crime due to economic and social reasons before it really gets out out of hand?

There seems to be a problem in the black community and crime. It doesnt matter if it happens in a housing pj of the south bronx or eny or if it happens in middle class black neighborhoods such as coop city, canarsie, cambria heights, laurlton, st albans, wakefield, williamsbridge to name a few. There always seem to be high crime in black areas of the city. Can we all just get along.
