Odd thing is, according to my research, winning bids for long island city hotels seems more expensive than Madison Square Garden area hotels. Is Madison Square Garden a good area to stay, in terms of conveniency to and from most famous site-seeing places?
It’s very convenient, if a but drab. There are more rooms in Midtown than anywhere else in the city. Thus, you can get a good deal if you wait until the last minute and there are rooms available. Of course, it’s a risk.

RE the Garden area, I would check the lists at betterbidding to see what the hotels are that folks are winning in the area. There are a few doozies. But as the pp said, it's a good jumping off spot for seeing the city with excellent transit access, even if the neighborhood itself is dull.

Use the bidding feature on priceline.com to get a room in Manhattan. You can easily get a room at a 3* hotel in Manhattan fpr about $110-120/night. I do it all the time.
