Not everyone has a 9-5. There are a lot of transit workers, hospital workers, parking lot attendants, hairdressers, actors, hotel workers, lawyers, security guards, home care workers, 24hr restaurant employees, etc. who work all different hours. Even nurses, therapists and teachers who go into private homes work non-typical hours.

IS The city that never sleeps .... Try to obtain a sitting for dinner in a fine restaurant at 8:30 in NYC.... Good luck!
In BsAs waiters still have the chairs on top of the tables st 8:30. gotta wait
All stores in the Capital are lighted and jammed with shoppers. Incredibly, 2:30 in the AM, the streets are teaming with pedestrians and vehicular traffic ! I'm always amazed when I visit BsAs. Paris and Rome will quite down after mid-night, in general. I am born, raised, University under and post grad educated Doctor!
However, can say in my travels ... NYC is not the prize winner of the Vity that Never Sleeps!
Since Mayor Guliani days, NYC have steadily lost afterhours entertainment. In 2000 days, there is very vibrant afterhours scene from midnight til 6am. Today most NYers clock out by 3am, I've gone out several times in NYC and it is quite dead around 3am compare how it used to be. I'm not talking about people walking around at TimesSquare. There is lot more shops opened, more places to eat, and such the old days. Today a lot of eatries only caters to the 9-5pm, they don't even do dinner. A lot of big stores close by 9pm where as back then lots of mom+pop stores stay open all night.
plenty? no way, the city is mostly dead at night. It's a total misnomer
Obviously it's more dead at 3AM than 3PM...however, there is still tons of stuff open late at night (relatively speaking). Bodegas, supermarkets, laundromats, fast food, diners, drug stores, etc. are often open 24/7, plus most bars are open til 4AM every night. Not to mention, the subway and most bus lines run 24/7.
