The last time I was in New York, maybe October or November I had just missed the train back to Connecticut by like 5 or 10 minutes, so I was hoping to grab a sandwich or some food to kill some time. Nothing within like 6 blocks of Grand Central was open, or if it was open they were just closing (was around 11:15 PM)
New York is always considered the city that never sleeps. But does it really never sleep?
First of all, very few stores remain open late, or 24/7 other than around Times Square. Most stores are open at 10 pm to 6 - 8 pm Mon - Sat, and 11 - 12 pm to 5 - 7 pm on Sundays. Some are even closed on Saturdays and/or Sundays.
Yes, the subway run 24/7 - but do people really use it at 3 am?
The city is also more than half empty on holidays.
It sleeps at different times. People do use MTA at 3am because they are either going or coming from work. They are also traveling back home after a night of partying. I am not sure about working out at 3am. I guess if that is what your schedule permits then that is what you do.

If that happens to you again, I recommend Park Tavern down Park Avenue a couple blocks, Stout NYC is on 41st just off Park, or for a quick sandwich there is a 24hr deli on the south side of 42nd past Madison. Among others that are open at that time.

Well that's not exactly the most liveliest area that time of day.
