escalators are made to move people from one level to the next
there is nothing there that implies that you must stand still and be transported by the moving escalator alone
the first escalator was called a "moving staircase" and they would offer people brandy at the top to calm them down after such an ordeal
we are a decade into the 21st century and escalators are nothing new .... like any other people mover, sidewalk, roadway, etc a little courtesy goes a long way .... you are more than welcome to stand and be escalated, just make sure to stabalize yourself by grabbing onto that had rail and while your at it, hold yourself tight and to the right and keep all appendages and property inside your personal space until the ride is over

This is true. I marvel at these forums now and then. Someone here implied there is no such thing as courtesy among New Yorkers. I've held doors open for others and others have done so for me. I've said 'excuse me' to get past and folks have smiled and moved and vice versa. While it's true there are more than enough self absorbed idiots in the mix, the general disdain some have for the city as a place that's half way decent just boggles the mind. Folks using escalators are no different. In fact, I'll go so far as to be more specific as to my original post, namely the fact that non-New Yorkers are far more likely to not 'get it' and show attitudes as distasteful as some of our own. I also wonder about the folks who laugh at the notion that there's any such thing as decency in New York at all. Something tells me that's just an excuse for their own disregard. The etiquette on escalators is exactly the same as etiquette in any other context. Some show it and some don't. My own experience tells me there are more decent New Yorkers than not.
I agree with the OP. Escalators are for standing and being ESCALATED. Those for whom the escalators are not fast enough should take the stairs if they wish to dash, rather than having to have a path made for them on the escalator by squeezing everyone else to the right.
The idea of escalators is not merely to make it so people can just stand there while Schindler does the heavy lifting (that's what elevators are for). The idea is to facilitate egress from an area without requiring additional space. That works best when people walk.
Some may disagree with me here, but my take is this> Escalators are for lazy people or people whom have conditions that prevent them from taking stairs.
What are your thoughts?
My thoughts are that if I am trying to carry home some really heavy packages, I am taking the damn escalator, because that is a situation it was also invented for. If you want to think I'm lazy, that's your problem, not mine.
