I've always thought of it being universal black ghetto dialect when someone "axes" questions. I've heard that from blacks around the country.

I have a related question. Is there a particular way New Yorkers pronounce the word "elementary"? I watched Liz Cho on the news and she really pronounces every possible syllable. Where I grew up (not NY) the last syllable is almost pronounced "tree" instead of having two syllables "tah-ree".

How do you say it? Are you a NY native?

The Philadelphia accent also does the "shtr" thing. And they pronounce their words with an "aw" sound rather than "all". Don't believe me? Get someone from Philly to say street or automobile.

It's also like that in Baltimore -- BAWL-tim -er.

Philly and Baltimore accents are very similar.
