Shorter commute for parents.

More activities within a walkable distance.

Greater diversity of cultural events.

Schools are better.

Generally, a single family will not make such a stark choice as Manhattan vs outer borough. They will live where their budget allows.

not really, because if they're not sheltered,
they will be exposed to all extremes of
personalities and characters on a daily
basis that you might not see in the other
boroughs.
