Well my rescue dog is unfortunately facing major issues. I just got back from a vet and he needs thousands in dental work, which I cannot afford. We didn't even bother with blood work because the dental is a deal breaker on its own. I'm going to give him a few good days of relaxation and humane treatment, then bring him to the shelter to be put to sleep. We're pretty bummed about this, but knew it was a possibility.
Can you not find your dog a new owner, who could handle the expenses? Or perhaps cut a deal with your vet? I realize the timing is very difficult just now...but hate to see your dog lose his life because of the high cost of treatment which might otherwise lead to a good, long life for him.

The Humane Society vet, which is near Bloomingdale's (just east) is vastly cheaper for these things.
I do mean vastly. The same dental operation that was $1,000. at my vet would cost under $400. there.
Since the little guy was a stray, you may be able to get assistance if you adopt him, specifically through the Pets for Life Program. While it's geared more to financial need, there might be a program for adopting a stray animal, or they might be able to refer you to one. One of the vets we used (now retired in Florida, or I'd send you to him) was a vet affiliated with various rescue societies, who would do procedures at cost, or free, in some cases, to encourage adoption of animals with needs.
You may also get a referral from one of the veterinary schools as some may have clinics that may cover his health needs. It's a heartbreaking situation, but there may be hope, even for a 10-year old dog.
