I actually make a little under 40K and rent a decent room in an apartment in Riverdale Bronx. Very nice neighborhood my the way. I pay $700 for rent all included. I don't mind living with a roommate for now until I start making more money then I am probably taking my VA home loan and buying a condo or a co-op.

As I said before and I am certain just about everyone will agree with me, there is NO way you can get by with $30-40k comfortably in NYC. You will not be able to live alone, you will not be able to afford cable, you will not be able to go out on weekends, you will not be able eat out too often and most importantly don't even think about living in one of the nicer neighborhoods.
Unless you can break it down how you were able to afford rent and everything else I just mentioned off of $30k I don't think you know what you are talking about.

Not saying this isn't possible, but I'm curious.
Wifey works as an external auditor for a mid-sized accounting company, and their entry level auditors make 60k, which is about the same the big 4 pay. So I'm wondering how you come up with that number... is it an offer you already received?
But to answer your question...it's quite possible to live a comfortable lifestyle on that salary. You might need to live in the outer boroughs but I think you should be fine.
She is getting robbed. Or experience is not very "in depth". No shade but Im an auditor as well and make well over $60K. Havent made that salary in years.....
I know this post is old but I moved to Amityville, Long Island from PA. I did it for a relationship. She already lived there and I was a nurse that needed to get a job. She made 50k a year and could only afford a one room apt. with just a closet and a bathroom. No kitchen. We used an electric skillet, microwave, toaster oven and crackpot to eat. The room was about 500 Sq. ft. That's it. It was ok at first because I was in love and figured once I got a job,we could eventually move. How wrong I was. I couldn't get a job to save my life. I had been a nurse for almost 20 years with an exemplary record. I even tried agency work. Nothing. I applied at CVS,FAMILY DOLLAR, A vitamin supply warehouse, etc. I couldn't get a break! I did have fall back money so I was able to contribute but after a year,we decided to move back to PA. My now wife got a job immediately as did I and life is great. 70k in Manhattan comfortably.. Not a chance in HELL!! If you have managed to do it, I would love to hear how you went about it.
