If peak fare is $21, $40 would be almost double. I still think Metro North would be losing money, as I calculated in my edits.

Transit systems operate at a loss but their economic benefits to the metro area far outweigh their cost. Some systems are even free.

Metro North should add a train or two during that gap, at least on the weekends if they aren't already. I don't take Metro North so idk.

Guys,

It's as simple as understanding supply and demand. There is not enough demand at 3:30am on a Monday morning fir metro north to run trains during that gap.

That would be true if it were a private good. However the metro north is a public good due to market failure which means the laws of supply and demand dont very much apply.

But why does the LIRR run 24 hour trains but Metro North doesn't?

They should def run them on the weekend, or at-least start them back up at 4:00AM (last call) on Sat and Sunday mornings... Drunk people hanging around on the street for a few hours with nothing to do is not a good idea.

my guess would be because no oneuses the train at those hours. NYC is the city that never sleeps. People who live in the suburbs do.

It actually wouldn't surprise me if the actual reason had to do with cleaning Grand Central. I think MNRR has close to the ridership of the LIRR (I think I read somewhere that it surpassed it). And there's nothing saying the trains have to run the full route, but they could at least run them to North White Plains, Stamford, and Croton Harmon respectively. (Though with the New Haven and Hudson Lines, it wouldn't be the worst idea in the world to run them the full route, since they pass through some denser areas all the way to the end).
