I have a toll question for those that live in the NYC area. I was traveling from Summit, NJ to Huntington Station, Long Island recently to visit with my wife's family. I had money for tolls and paid most of them. However, at one toll plaza along the way ( a small one) there was only an EZ Pass lane and exact change coins lane. The Cash Receipt lane was closed (had orange pylons in front of it) so i was forced to run through the exact change side without paying as i only had 50 cents and not a 1.50 in coins. I know i will get a fine/bill in the mail.
However, I am thinking i can just mail in the toll amount and a letter explaining the reason i ran the toll. Not sure if anyone has had any experience with this happening or who i may need to contact? My brother-in-law wasn't sure since he has always used ez pass.

Don't worry about it till you receive a bill - believe it or not they don't catch everybody. You may even be able to get out of it if you call them and talk nice and it's your first offense.
You may not get a bill.. I used to do temp work for one of the bridges here in NYC and I can't tell you how many times people ran the cash lanes day and night with or without people working in it.. I dont even think they had cameras to read the LP # .. For sure you would get a ticket if the officers pulled you over etc.. but I would just wait and see.. things might have changed since i worked there a few yrs ago who knows..

I think they did this on purpose to force otherwise honest drivers to make a "choice".
The state is broke and this is there way of getting money. If you didn't have change, then how would you have been able to turn back around? Yes, exactly and they know this which is why I believed they set you up.
You can send a letter if you want to, but it won't do any good. The fine will just go up even more for you wasting their time.
Thanks RC I am hoping for now bill. Marilyn that is an interesting take on it. That has actually crossed my mind, especially with out of state people driving through and i am sure most just pay the fine. I will see what comes of it in the coming weeks.

I don't know if this will work for NY or Jersey, but I know that with most southern california courts, if you say you weren't the one driving, they'll let you go. I don't even think they ask who the driver was.
But NY "might" be different. If you get a ticket and have the time, I would go to the courthouse and tell the judge exactly what happened and why you did it. Don't send a letter. No one's gonna read it.
The judge may or may not let you off. It doesn't hurt to try.
